Alternative certification is a pathway for individuals with a college degree, in a field other than education, to receive the certification required to teach. The Teach Louisiana website provides an overview of:

• Alternative Certification programs
• Program providers
• Federal student aid options
• Praxis information.

Once an individual enrolls in an alternative certification program, he/she may be eligible for employment with our School System. Once we receive a letter from the university/program provider in which he/she has enrolled; granted they are offered a position within our System, we will then apply for a practitioner’s license(PL) on his/her behalf. The (PL) will outline the conditions for employment. This is a basic overview. For more specific information regarding a specific program offered at a particular university, please contact that university directly.

Teach St. Tammany Alternative Certification Program

Teach St. Tammany is a path for college graduates in fields other than education to become a teacher in our school system in critical shortage areas. On-the-job training, certification, professional development, and ongoing support are provided while teaching full time and receiving a teacher salary. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the program with a three-year commitment to teach in STPPS.

The St. Tammany Parish Public School System hires coaches for a variety of sports. These include:

• Baseball 
• Basketball
• Football
• Golf
• Soccer
• Softball
• Swimming
• Tennis
• Volleyball
• Wrestling

Coaches are needed at the freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels and receive a percentage of their salaries, depending on the sport as well as the grade level.

High School Athletics

Certified Trainers – 2%
Non-Certified Trainers – 1 ½%

The maximum one person may receive is:
      Athletic Directors – 26%
      Coaches and Trainers – 22%

Junior High School Athletics

The maximum one person may receive is:
      Athletic Directors –17%
      Coaches and Trainers –15%

• Principals are responsible for hiring coaches for their schools. Most times, the coaching position is connected with a teaching position.
• Our School System has a certain number of physical education positions that are available each year. For applicants who are interested in coaching, it is highly recommended that they choose an area of certification other than physical education. We do not hire a large number of physical education teachers each year.
• Teachers at the elementary and middle school levels are allowed to coach if their schedules permit.

Student Teachers in the St. Tammany Parish Public School System have the chance to be a part of one of the leading educational systems on both the state and national levels where high expectations of both its teachers and students are clearly communicated. In addition, our School System takes pride in helping future teachers prepare for the challenging and rewarding experiences faced as a new educator. Student teaching in St. Tammany Parish also increases the opportunity of becoming employed in our System.
