Substitute Teacher Pay Policy For Extended Periods of Time (Eff. 12/01/89)

It is the philosophy of the St. Tammany Parish School Board to employ certified substitute teachers if possible. Substitute teachers shall be paid according to the schedule that has been approved by the Board for day-by-day employment except in the case where a teacher is out for more than ten (10) consecutive days. In this case, the substitute teacher shall be paid, beginning on the 11th day, at the below listed rates depending on qualifications.

  1. If the substitute-teacher is a certified teacher, the substitute will be paid based on his/her degree and experience.
  2. If the substitute teacher has a Bachelor's degree and/or a Master's Degree and is not qualified to receive a teacher's certificate based on the concerned degree, the substitute teacher will be paid double the daily rate of pay which has been established by the St. Tammany Parish School Board for substitutes who possess a degree.
  3. If the substitute teacher is a High School Graduate and/or college student not yet having earned a degree, the substitute teacher will be paid double the daily rate of pay which has been established by the St. Tammany Parish School Board for substitutes who possess a high school diploma.

NOTE: Substitute teachers must substitute teach for ten (10) consecutive days and thereafter, for the same teacher, in order to be eligible to be paid at the accelerated rate which would begin on the eleventh day.

If there is an interruption in service, the pay will revert back to the regular pay schedule. If the substitute teacher feels that the interruption is due to extenuating circumstances, the interruption must be approved by the Personnel Director or Assistant Personnel Director in order for him/her to continue to be paid at the accelerated rate.
