CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE PREVENTION

The staff will develop a Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program (for classroom instruction) to include classroom materials such as those presented by Judge Steve Duczer, and any other materials that the Superintendent feels would be appropriate for the programs.

1. A counselor at each school will be designated as the school site coordinator of the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Education and Reporting Program.
2. At the beginning of each academic year, new counselors will be trained in Child Abuse Prevention, Education and Reporting.
3. At each school site, counselors will train entire faculty and staff on the Child Abuse Prevention, Education and Reporting Program.
4. Each K-8 school will place in its “Parent/Student Handbook” the following statement:
As mandated by the St. Tammany Parish School Board, students in grades K-8 will receive instruction on the topic of Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Education and Reporting.

All materials that will be used in the instruction may be previewed by contacting the school administration.

We would also like to encourage you to talk with your child about this topic as well as other general safety issues.

5. During the nine weeks in which the school will instruct K-8 students in child sexual abuse, the following communication will be sent home:

Dear Parents:

As mandated by the St. Tammany Parish School Board, trained personnel will be presenting a classroom lesson on Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Education and Reporting. Although the children will have a chance to talk about the topic with a guidance counselor during the class lesson, we would like to encourage you to talk with your child about this important issue. This might also be a good time to talk to your child about other general safety issues.

Materials to be used in the lesson are available at the school for preview. If you wish to preview the material, or if you have any questions, please call the school.

Thank you for your concern and interest in the safety of your child.

Sincerely,
GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

6. On day two or three after instruction, the school will send home the following communication:

Dear Parents:

Your child has received the St. Tammany Parish School Board Mandated Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Education and Reporting Program. As a follow-up to this program, we encourage you to talk with your child about this important issue.

Thank you for your concern and interest in the safety of your child.

Sincerely,
GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

7. After the school has completed instructing all K-8 students, the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Education and Reporting Program Report Form must be completed and returned promptly to the Supervisor of Instruction, who coordinates the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program, St. Tammany Parish School Board.
8. At the beginning of each year, the Central Office will send to each K-8 school a packet of information about the program.
9. During each school year, the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Education and Reporting Program Advisory Committee will meet to review materials and make recommendations about the program.
