Naming of School Board Property

It is the policy of the St. Tammany Parish School Board to consider and properly process requests from the public to name School Board property, for persons who have contributed to the improvement of the St. Tammany Parish School Board and its delivery of educational services to the children of St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana.  While the School Board recognizes that many dedicated employees and committed citizens contribute to the success of the public school system, the naming of a school shall be reserved to recognize service of the highest order in cases where contributions have covered the general population of the entire school system.  The honor of naming School Board property shall be limited to persons who have been deceased for no less than one (1) year from the date of the request. In rare instances and proper circumstances, the Superintendent may ask the School Board to consider and process the naming of School Board property in honor of a living person and persons deceased for less than one (1) year.  All applicable State provisions shall be followed in such cases.

The policy for naming buildings and outdoor facilities, such as stadiums, shall be that the Superintendent shall convene an advisory body to be composed of the Superintendent and School Board President or their designees, a representative of teachers, a representative of non-certificated employees, an administrator, a representative of the Retired Teachers Association, a representative of the Parent Teachers Association, and other organizations, which may be added permanently or temporarily, as deemed necessary.  The Superintendent shall develop administrative procedures and requirements to receive, review, and consider applications.

Upon completion of the review process, the advisory board shall transmit any recommendation to name School Board property to the School Board for its consideration, public input, deliberation, and vote. With the approval of the Superintendent, a school committee may be formed to name a portion of a building on a school campus, dedicated to honor or recognize an individual.  The Superintendent shall develop administrative procedures and requirements to receive, review, and consider applications for this naming of portions of buildings.  The Superintendent, in consultation with the School Board President and School Board members representing and/or involved with the specific school being discussed, is granted the authority to name portions of buildings with the school committee approval and does not require School Board action.
