6th Annual Pelican Palooza

Have you ever seen more than 2,500 rubber turtles floating in Lake Pontchartrain? You will get your chance on Saturday, March 29th, when a day of fun and excitement breaks out at the Jackson Avenue park located at the east end of the Mandeville lakefront. Woodlake Elementary invites the entire Northshore community to join them for their 6th Annual Pelican Palooza festival.

The day kicks off at 8:00 A.M. with the Pel-I-CAN RUN 5K race. It is followed by a
1-mile fun run at 9:00 A.M. With music playing and lots of give-aways, the fun atmosphere is great for both novice runners as well as those with a more competitive spirit. Race day registration is available beginning at 7:00 A.M. Registered runners will receive a t-shirt and have an opportunity to win a handmade race award.

When the races conclude at 10:00 A.M., the Pelican Palooza officially opens. The music will continue as children are entertained with inflatables, a dunk tank, and lots of carnival games. Concessions will include jambalaya, hamburgers, hot dogs, and BOP’s frozen custard. A silent auction will offer a variety of themed-baskets as well as original artwork by Woodlake students.

The Palooza culminates at 2:00 P.M. with a Northshore exclusive, one-of-a-kind event, the Turbo Turtle Race. Over 2,500 “adopted” rubber turtles will swim their way through a race course in the lake. The owner of the first place turtle will receive $1,000 cash!

The Pelican Palooza is a great family event. For more information, to download a race registration form, and to learn how to adopt a turtle, please visit the Woodlake PTA website at http://www.woodlakepta.org/.

Funds generated from the Pelican Palooza will be used to enhance the school’s technology and assist the PTA in its ongoing commitment to bringing cultural, civic, and fitness-related programs to the students.

Annually the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has four Americanism contests for elementary school students (K-6).  The Americanism contest that both Christopher Nava (1st place)  and Ava Frerman (3rd place) won was Coloring of the Preprinted American Flag.  We had 222 entries in this contest.  VFW Member, Franklin Lanzetta, presented awards to the winning students.

Pep Rally

l

On Tuesday, January 14, Woodlake Elementary held their end-of-quarter Pep Rally to celebrate students with perfect attendance.  Kindergartner, Sam King, who has perfect attendance for the entire first semester, kicked off the pep rally by leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Principal Lelia Parker, rewarded the students' hard work with both recognition and a little spirit from the Fontainebleau High School Cheerleaders.  The cheerleaders led the students in cheers and did a great job in helping to make it an awesome and memorable event for each little Pelican!

Teacher Spotlight: Jenee Donaldson

l

Mrs. Donaldson has worked in St. Tammany Parish for 20 years. She began as a special education teacher and a first grade teacher at Chahta-Ima Elementary in Lacombe. She began at Woodlake in the school year of 1995-1996 as a Transitional First (T-1) Teacher. Mrs. Donaldson also worked as a second grade teacher. She has now been a third grade teacher for a number of years. It is evident that Mrs. Donaldson really enjoys teaching children. She is a very strong “hands-on” or project based teacher. She is a caring teacher who uses strategies to help her students become independent learners. Something very interesting about Mrs. Donaldson is that she lived in China many years ago and volunteered for the International School of Beijing. Mrs. Donaldson, you a great teacher who is always doing what is best for your students. Thank you for the commitment and dedication that you have given to the students in St. Tammany Parish and Woodlake.

Market Day

l

On Friday, November 8th, Woodlake Elementary’s Multiage classrooms held their “Market Day”.  Twice a year, the Second Grade Experts get to set up shop and provide goods and services to the First Grade Novices.  Students earn “class money” throughout the year to spend on Market Day.  Second graders must create a business plan, track their sales, and pay taxes.  It is a priceless real world experience that the children could not be more excited about.  Pictured are (left) Second Grade Expert, Aidan Barth, sells one of her hand-painted clip boards to First Grade Novice, Peyton Miller (right).

Educator Spotlight

l

Jane Stratton has worked in St. Tammany for 26 years and taught many years in other places prior to St. Tammany. Ms. Stratton has taught Kindergarten, T-1, 2nd grade, Multiage, and most likely other grades in between. She is an extremely dedicated educator. She is a leader at our school. Ms. Stratton works very closely with her grade level and often shares ideas about ways to better meet students’ needs. She is flexible, cooperative, and creative. She naturally meshes her teaching in multiage to accommodate the needs of both novices and experts. Two of her grandchildren are with her at Woodlake. We are privileged to have Ms. Stratton as part of our school team and appreciate all the contributions that she has made to education and to our community.
