The students of Whispering Forest Elementary were visited by several special guests Wednesday morning, October 16, among them Gumbo, the New Orleans Saints Mascot.
The special occasion was the donation of ten new salad bars to the St. Tammany Parish Public School System, with two of them placed at Whispering Forest in Slidell. The salad bars were donated by the Produce Marketing Association (PMA) in an effort to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and boost health among children.
Guests included Bryan Silbermann, President & CEO of PMA, and Jan M. DeLyser, Board President for PMA. Supervisor of Food Service Pat Farris and Principal Eric Sacks met with them while lunch was served to the students using the new salad bars. The guests were taken on a tour of the school by several student guides, with Gumbo stopping in on several classrooms to engage in a few “high fives” and entertain the students.
A special song was performed during the lunch period to demonstrate to students that vegetables are not only good for you, but also taste good. The cafeteria was decorated in conjunction with National School Lunch Week, and all the cafeteria workers were in costume. Representatives from Sysco Food Services, Rouses Supermarket, and Capitol City Produce were also on hand for the event.
PMA is part of the National Fruit and Vegetable Alliance which supports Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools and the First Lady’s Let’s Move initiative, which focuses on providing students access to healthy foods. The Produce Marketing Association is a trade association representing companies from every segment of the global produce and floral supply chain. The group is holding its annual convention in New Orleans this week, drawing 19,000 attendees from more than 60 countries worldwide.
