PRHS Student Named
State Student of the Year

Pearl River High senior Jon Mitchell was named Louisiana State Student of the Year in the High School Division April 16 at the annual Louisiana Department of Education event in the State Museum in Baton Rouge. School Board Honors PRHS

Pearl River High School was honored twice by the School Board at its April 11 meeting in Slidell, once for having the District Student of the Year in the High School Division, Jon Mitchell, and second for having the District Support Employee of the Year in the High School Division, Shannon Landry, the manager of the cafeteria. On hand for the occasion were, from left to right (top row) Karl Van Leeuwen (teacher), Carey Grush (teacher), Peggy Seeley (School Board Member), Jon Mitchell (Parish Student of the Year), Regina Sanford (Supervisor), and Tara Chandler (librarian). Crossfire Plays the Prom

The local band Crossfire, which is made up of five Pearl River High students, performed two original songs "Sweet Content" and "Falling" at the beginning of the school Prom on March 16.  This is the first time Crossfire has performed for their fellow students. The members of the band are Lead Singer Kelsey Parker, Lead Guitar Traven Handley, Rhythm Guitar Nick Ranatza, Drummer Brennen Ouder, and Bass Player Bryan Spencer. It was also Brennen's Senior Prom.
                                            
                                                      

Band Brings Home
Liberty Bowl Trophies

The Pearl River High School Band was spotlighted at the St. Tammany Parish School Board meeting Thursday night for recently receiving several honors for its participation at the Allstate Liberty Bowl on December 28 in Memphis. There they earned two large trophies and three large plaques, placing second in the Class A Field Show Competition and placing third in the Class A Parade Competition. The school’s Drum Line won the title of “Outstanding Percussion Section,” and student Victoria Johnson was awarded the “Most Outstanding Drum Major” in the competition. The school’s Band Director Stephen Abadie and Principal Michael Winkler were also commended by School Board members. Abadie has been Pearl River High’s band director for two years, and he said the trip to Memphis was a great opportunity to showcase the band’s talents. “The highlight of it all was the halftime show,” Abadie said. LaCUE Video Awarded

Pearl River High won a Student Video Award at the LACUE (Louisiana Computer Using Educators) Conference in New Orleans November 27. Pearl River High’s video “Art by the Numbers” shows an artist who is inspired by mathematics to create intricate origami sculptures and ocarina music. It won in the Artistic category. Teacher Clear Moore said, “This video highlighted the connection between math, art, and music by exploring the work of Pearl River High School sophomore, Austin Pohlman. Last year Austin won second place in the Louisiana State Literary Rally in Algebra and is currently teaching himself calculus. He also plays multiple instruments and creates very intricate paper sculptures. Art By The Numbers showcases his origami and a little of his music." The video team consisted of, from left to right, Ashton Borne, Jessica Talamo, Clear Moore, Kasey Johnsen, and Austin Pohlmann.
