Creative Writing Honors

Northshore High School students earned numerous accolades this year for their creative writing efforts. Prism, which is produced by Northshore’s Creative Writing Club InkSplash, placed second in the state, receiving a ranking of Superior Nominated for Highest in the National Council of Teachers of English Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines (PRESLM). Also winning recognition by the National Council of Teachers of English for Superior Achievements in Writing for 2014 was 11th grader Alex Lew. Alex was one of only two honorees in the state.


In addition, Prism was honored as a Silver Medalist this year from the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association. CSPA is an international student press association, founded in 1925, uniting student writers and faculty advisors at schools and colleges through conferences, idea exchanges and award programs. Northshore students Emily Campbell, Ruvini Wijesekera, and Andreea Popa also received individual Gold Circle Awards for their entries.

Scholastic Writing Awards

Northshore High School students were also recognized by The Scholastic Writing Awards of Southeast Louisiana. This prestigious awards program dates back to 1923 and is the longest-running program for creative teenagers in the United States. Its mission is to identify, recognize and validate young writers. Alumni include Sylvia Plath, Bernard Malamud, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, and Truman Capote.

Young Author’s Contest

Northshore High School writers also collected awards in the Young Author’s Contest sponsored by the Louisiana Reading Association. Northshore’s winners for St. Tammany Parish are Maria Berrios, Grade 11, First Place Poetry, Nathan Cunningham, Grade 11, Honorable Mention Nonfiction, Dooyoel Kim, Grade 12, Honorable Mention Fiction, and Anastasia Bennett, Grade 12, Honorable Mention Poetry. Maria’s poem “Confusion” went on to place second in the state and was published in the publication Les Jeunes Ecrivains.

Academic All State Winners


Congratulations to the LHSAA Composite Academic All State Winners! Northshore High is very proud of the student-athletes! Booze and Cruise, You Lose

On March 17, 2014, seniors at Northshore High School were educated in the dangers of drinking and driving, courtesy of the Slidell Police Department’s program “Booze and Cruise, You Lose.” In addition to the SPD’s presentation in the cafeteria, the program now includes an live reenactment of an accident involving driving under the influence. Volunteers, Slidell Fire Department, Acadian Ambulance and the Slidell Police department pulled out all the stops to deter students from ever drinking and driving.

Mayor Hosts Student
Ambassadors Breakfast


On Friday, January 31, 2014, student ambassadors from Northshore High School were treated to breakfast at the Slidell Auditorium to celebrate Mayor Freddy Drennan’s commitment to the Slidell community. Mayor Drennan is in the center of the Student Ambassador group.

November, 2013


Academic All-State


Caroline Fontenot and Scott Kent were named Composite Academic All-State in Cross Country at the State Cross Country Meet in Natchitoches, Louisiana on November 19, 2013.  Northshore High School is very proud of these two student-athletes!


Black and Gold Day


Students and teachers were “in that number” on November 15, 2013 at Northshore High School as they celebrated Black and Gold Day.  Everyone contributed one dollar to support the Children’s Museum of St. Tammany and sported their black and gold in support of our New Orleans Saints.

Egg Drop


Michael Vivien, a senior at Northshore High School, anxiously awaited at the top of the football bleachers, as his precious egg sailed down to earth in Mr. Rock’s physics class. Students were challenged to design an apparatus to protect the egg from cracking when dropped from the bleachers.


Boys State and Girls State Students Honored


Students who recently participated in this summer's American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Citizenship Education programs were recognized by the School Board during its meeting in Covington Thursday night, Sept. 12. Principal Frank Jabbia, at left, is shown congratulating Michael McKinney, Terrie Jackson, Christie Nienaber (Senior Counselor and Sponsor of the team), and Nick Petras for their participation in the program. A resolution was passed by the School Board commending their achievement.


Six Students Named
National Merit Semi-finalists

Northshore High School is proud to recognize the 2013-2014 National Merit Semi-Finalists.  These outstanding students were honored to be selected based on a rigorous application process, based on PSAT scores, community service, essay prompt, and community recommendations.  National Merit Finalists will be selected in the spring of 2014. Congratulations to these students on their phenomenal accomplishment!

New Principal Appointed


Frank Jabbia was recently appointed principal of Principal of Northshore High School, where he has been Assistant Principal for the past seven years.
