Monteleone Technology Award Goes To Ms. DeSanti

Patricia DeSanti, a teacher from Monteleone Junior High in Mandeville, won the 2013-2014 Monteleone Technology Award. She was presented to the School Board at its May meeting, with Technology Supervisor Julie Matte telling of her classroom accomplishments and use of technology.

Ms. DeSanti, above left, won the honor for her project entitled “Monteleone Magic Movie Makers,” (The 4M Club) which will launch next year. It will rely on story boards, photos, film clips, and other materials from different classrooms to create a professional-grade documentary of the many activities at Monteleone Junior High. The finished product will feature voice overs, sound effects, and music, said Mrs. Matte.

The completed films will be delivered electronically to the school’s Broadcast Team and included in the school’s weekly broadcasts. Throughout the year, the 4M Club will collect photographs and video clips, each capturing special moments at the school. These media will be used to create a longer movie presentation called “Monteleone Magic – The Year in Photos.” The movie will be burned to DVDs and made available for sale at the end of the year, making the project self-sustaining from the funds raised.

Principal Donna Addison was on hand to congratulate Ms. DeSanti for her win. She will receive $1000 in materials as a result of her selection. The Monteleone Technology Award was established in 2003 in memory of the late Leonard P. Monteleone, superintendent of the School System between 1995 and 2003. It spotlights innovative teachers who use technology in new and inventive ways in the classroom.

Adventure in Mining

The 8th grade Earth Science classes at Monteleone Junior High participated in Diamond Del’s Gem Mining Adventure.  While the students were learning about how rocks and minerals were identified they were able to mine for their own minerals in the mobile gem mine.  Each student was given a mining box of Brazilian mining ore.  The students then sluiced the ore in the water flumes to discover their own gem collection.  Back in class students were able to identify and classify their minerals.  Pictured are Nira Daigrepont, Bailey Levine, and Bailey Weber.

Keep Mandeville Beautiful

The Monteleone Jr. High Builder's Club spent Saturday morning helping with the Keep Mandeville Beautiful project.  Keep Mandeville Beautiful is a city wide event to pick up trash and tend to garden beds along the public roadways. Hundreds of people from many different groups took part in this event. Eleven of our members of our Builder's Club gathered at the Lakefront Gazebo at 9 AM to pick up and categorize trash along Jackson Avenue from the marina to 190. They completed their work and stayed to enjoy hamburgers provided by the event coordinators. All in all, it was good, clean fun! Flying the Flag

When is the only time it is acceptable to fly our American flag upside down? The answer to this question and many more enlightened Monteleone Junior High's Community Relations class recently. Mike Peats, hailing from American Legion Post 16, organized a delightful group of fellow Legion members to educate the students on the proper care and protocol for our beloved flag. By the way, the students learned that flying the American flag upside down is a type of SOS signal. Section 8a of the United States Flag Code states, "The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property." Pictured are, front row left to right, Payton Bates and Madison Shay. On the back row, left to right, are Mike Peats, American Legion Post 16 and Richard Mecom, American Legion Post 415.
