Career Day

More than 50 business and professional people from throughout Slidell and New Orleans visited Mayfield Elementary students on May 4 to take part in "Career Day," spending time in a number of classrooms to share what they do in their jobs.

Some of the presenters were a chef, a television station meteorologist, a professional fisherman, a registered nurse, officers from area police departments, deputies from the Sheriff's Office, firefighters from area fire districts, National Guardsmen, swamp tour captain, a 911 dispatcher,a martial arts instructor, a yoga instructor, a professional baseball player, a marine biologist, and a hurricane hunter.

This was the first Career Day held at Mayfield Elementary, one of the many great things happening at the school. It was a wonderful feeling to know that our faculty, parents, and community came together to make it a memorable day for our students.

West African Masks

Mrs. Ginny Shurlds' kindergarten and 1st grade art students at Mayfield Elementary recently learned about the culture of West Africa. The study focused on the masks of West Africa as pieces of art. Symmetry and shapes were noted in the masks. The students then created their own masks in West African style.

New School Opens

Monday, February 27, marked the first day in our new school. Eager students, faculty and staff made their way down the colorful hallways for their first morning meeting together in the gym, the beginning to their first day on the campus.

“The first day in a new school is always exciting,” said Superintendent W. L. “Trey” Folse, III during his visit to the school. “The administration, faculty and staff have worked hard to help students with the transition to the new school. We’re pleased with all this school has to offer, and we think it is something the Mayfield Elementary community can be proud of.”

Faculty and staff, custodians and School System officials spent the Mardi Gras Holiday moving into the new school building and campus on Hwy. 190 between Lacombe and Slidell. A meet and greet was held Saturday for parents and students to tour the new campus.

“As we look forward to this new beginning, it is essential that we all work together as a team to ensure a smooth transition for our children so that they continue to be successful in the classroom,” Principal LeBlanc stated. “We are eager to work together to create a safe, warm learning environment for our students, and a place where parents always feel welcome.”

Students got to "try their hand" at some real archeology.  The Project sent 1 kilo of "matrix" i.e - dirt and debris that students sorted and identified rocks, plants, and animals from the late Pleistoscene.  The matrix is at least 9,000 years old!   The goal of the project is to reconstruct the Hyde Park, NY, area as it would have been 10,000-14,000 years ago.
