Literacy Luau

MMS Literacy Luau was Thursday, May 1st.  Families read books, weighed things, made leis, wrote descriptive paragraphs, make fruit ka-bobs and lots more. Students participated in a Book Swap and everyone went home with lots of new books to read.
What a great way for families to learn together.

Greek Fest

Mrs. Marino’s sixth grade class recently had a Greek Fest. Students chose gods and goddesses to represent. They dressed as their god and shared their stories. Afterwards, students enjoyed Greek foods. What a memorable way to culminate their mythology study.

Mr. Ben Hartman, Sixth Grade Math and Science teacher, receives the PTA Educator of Distinction Award from Mandeville Middle School President Amanda Lee.  Mr. Hartman was also recently named Homer Williams VFW Post 8720 National Citizenship Educator Teacher at the local and district levels. Santa Paws

l

The YAP Club (Youth and Pets) at Mandeville Middle School participated in “Santa Paws.” They collected dog food, toys, dawn detergent, and towels to benefit the animals at the St. Tammany Animal Shelter.

Mrs. Marino’s sixth grade class applied their understanding of fractions and baked Christmas cookies. Students had to double or half recipes. Everyone enjoyed the scent of freshly baked cookies throughout the school and the cookies tasted yummy.

Builders Club Toys for Tots

Novel Sharing

Mrs. Hargrove’s fourth grade class finished reading the novel, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. As a culminating activity they had a tea and shared information learned throughout the unit of study.

District 9 Honor Choir

District 9 Honor Choir is available for students in St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington and St. Helena parishes. Seventy-eight students were selected through an audition process to participate in this honor choir. The New Orleans Saints are supporting healthy lifestyles for Mandeville Middle School students.5th grade students won the United Way Fund Raiser “The Biggest Loser” by having the least amount of money in their grade level jar by the end of the competition. They put lots of money in the 4th and 6th grade jars. Their reward was being able to participate in the “Saints Junior Training Camp” at MMS.

How To Deal With Stress

Saints kicker, Garrett Hartley, was a guest of Amplify instructor Olivia Ruby, who works with students on positive Life Skills. The topic for the day included how to deal with stress. Mr. Hartley shared with students how he handles the stress of being an NFL kicker and also encouraged students to make healthy choices and to be responsible about school.

Food Bank Collections

Mandeville Middle School students recently donated over 1300 items to the Samaritan Center Food Bank in the first monthly food drive of the year.  Pictured below are students who assisted PTA volunteers in loading the donations for delivery to the center.

Geography Map Skills

Team Building

l

Partners in Ms. Arledge's class were team building the first day of school as they constructed free-standing structures using spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of  string, and one marshmallow for the top. The pair  building the highest free-standing structure built in 18 minutes received a treat and a standing ovation from the rest of the class.  This activity coincides with Mandeville Middle's schoolwide theme for the 2013-2014 school year, "Mandeville Middle School Under Construction: Building Friendships, Communities, and Futures."  Pictured above are Samantha Colley and William Drake.

MMS theme this year is “ Building friendships, communities and futures”. 

Faculty Retreat

MMS held a faculty retreat in July in preparation for the new school year.
As  part of the retreat,   teachers wrote personal, professional and community things that they would demolish this school year. Teachers then put their list in the shredder as a symbol of getting rid of those things.
