Teacher of the Year

  Mandeville Junior High announced Jodi Newman as the 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Newman is a 7th grade math teacher who stays active at the school by serving on the PBIS Committee, Girls' Soccer Coach and the MJH Webmaster.   Pictured are Mrs. Jodi Newman with Principal Mary Ann Cucchiara.

 

PTA Reflections National Honors

Mandeville Junior High is pleased to announce that two of their students earned National Awards of Merit for PTA Reflections. Louisiana had six winners at the National level. Pictured are Kylie Ferguson who placed in Dance Choreography and Noah Custer who placed in the Film category.

 

PTA President of the Year

Mandeville Junior High's PTA President, Mrs. Suzanne Sonnier, was named St. Tammany Parish District PTA President of the Year at the last district board meeting.

 

 

Samaritan Center Guest

Dena Grosart, Director of the Samaritan Center, spoke with the 7th grade Talented Art students at Mandeville Junior High School recently. These and other students created clay bowls that they donated to the annual Empty Bowl/Fill the Bowl Event in Old Mandeville. The proceeds from the sale of their bowls are donated to the Samaritan Center to provide food for the needy. The Talented Art Teacher at Mandeville Junior High is Mary-Elaine Bernard. Parish Volleyball Champs

Honor Breakfast

Mandeville Junior High's PTA sponsored an Honor Breakfast for students earning a 3.5 average on their third nine weeks report card. Student Places 3rd in
State Spelling Bee

William Dunford, a seventh grader at Mandeville Junior High School, competed as a Louisiana finalist in the National Geographic Bee on April 5.  Approximately 80 students throughout Louisiana qualified as finalists, and all competed on April 5 for the opportunity to represent Louisiana in the National Geographic Bee, held in Washington, D.C.  William' placed third overall in Louisiana! The students and staff of Mandeville Junior High School are extremely proud of William’s success.  

 

Exponential Decay Functions?

               Functions of exponential decay may not sound appetizing, but students in Mr. Nichols’ class of Algebra 1 found them very engaging. Starting with a bag of 50 pieces, students removed approximately half the contents of the bag after each attempt. They listed the number of tries and the number of candies remaining until they were all gone. They ate the M & M’s removed after each try. They graphed the coordinate points to show exponential decay and also on the graphing calculator. Pictured are, left to right, Matthew Spitchley, Sarah Kate Casey, and Madison Hutson.

8th Graders Tour MHS

Essay Contest Awards

Mandeville Junior High students Alexander Lawlor and Alaa Malik won awards for essays they submitted to the Greater Covington Branch NAACP's Martin Luther King Essay Contest.

 

Visit From Mandeville High

Mandeville Junior High 8th grade students received a visit from the Mandeville High School Cheerleaders. They performed and gave information about upcoming tryouts to students entering the 9th grade next year. Visit to Tchefuncte

Mandeville Junior High Dance Team and Cheerleaders visited Tchefuncte Middle School to perform and give information about upcoming tryouts. FISH Employee for February

Mandeville Junior High announced Ms. Anne Mohana the February PBIS FISH Employee of the Month. Ms. Mohana lives the FISH PHILOSOPHY everyday at MJH and we appreciate all that she does to “Make Our Day”! She was given a small gift of appreciation and she will enjoy parking in the designated PBIS parking spot for the month of March.

 

Calculator Boxes

Mandeville Junior High student Michael Burkett recently completed the building of five wooden calculator boxes, each of which will hold 33 - 36 graphing calculators. The boxes will be permanently installed in math classrooms on campus. Michael completed the construction of the boxes as a partial requirement towards earning his Eagle Scout Award. Support Staff Person
of the Year

Mandeville Junior High announced Judy Stoltz as the 2013 Support Staff Person of the Year. She was selected by her peers to represent MJH. Pictured are Mary ann Cucchiara, Principal, and Ms. Judy Stoltz.

 

Educator of Distinction

Mandeville Junior High Technology Resource Teacher, Trish Picone, was named one of the 10 Louisiana State PTA Educators of Distinction for 2013. She was one of 23 from St. Tammany Parish Schools. Mrs. Picone has a Specialist in Educational Technology and is a National Board Certified Teacher and has worked at Mandeville Junior High for 14 of the 17 years as an educator.

 

Pickle Ball Champs

Mandeville Jr. High P.E. classes held a pickle-ball tournament, and our lunch time pickle-ball champs for 7 th grade are( left) Ryan Cook  and (right) Andrew  Ponder.  Pickle-ball is taught as a part of the physical education curriculum.  The seventh grade P.E. teachers are Janice Evans and Diane Rodrigue.

 

Substitute of the Year

Play Scheduled

The Mandeville Jr. High Talented Theater Company presents "Homework Eats Dog and Other Woeful Tales" by Alan Haehnel on Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, beginning at 7 p.m. on the Mandeville Junior High Cafe Stage. Admission is $5. The cast includes Laura Nunez, Sofia Oprea, Alaa Malik, Emily Gerber, Abigail Ezell, Ellie Stevens, Lindsey Licciardi, Kylie Ferguson, Savanah Needham, Kyle Currie, and Margaret Price. Excel Students Celebrated

Mandeville Junior High recently celebrated the 7th grade EXCEL students. EXCEL students have missed zero instructional minutes for the entire nine weeks. EXCEL students have no tardies, absences or check-outs. EXCEL students were rewarded with an extended lunch period, frozen treats and drawings for door prizes. Algebra I Measures Up

Mandeville Junior High Algebra I student Ellie Grace Stevens has her arm length measured by Emily Rone as the group's recorder, Becky deGeneres, looks on. The students were collecting and organizing data and then investigating linear relationships using arm length and foot length for the students in the class. The students then used pieces of spaghetti to try to find the line of best fit for their graphed data before entering the data into the graphing calculator to check the accuracy of their line and find the true linear regression for their values. The students are taught by Tracey Martinez.

 

Substitute of the Year

Teens on Time

Mandeville Junior High recently celebrated the 2nd Nine Weeks Seventh Grade Teens On Time. Students in the TOT program had no morning tardies for the entire nine week period. TOT students enjoyed an extended lunch period and door prizes were awarded. Visitors from Brazil

Mandeville Junior High students in Mrs. Angie Vizzuett's Spanish class recently hosted guest speakers. Two young adults from Brazil came to speak about culture, Dialect and modern life in Brazil. VFW Citizenship Award

Mrs. Karen Griggs was recently announced as the State winner in the VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award Contest – Jr. High School Level.  She is now representing the State of Louisiana in the National competition.

Karen teaches 7th grade American History and 8th grade Louisiana History gifted students at Mandeville Jr. High School.

 

All Tournament Team

Honor Jazz

Mandeville Junior High 8th grade trumpet player, Harrison Williams, represented his school at the LMEA District IX Honor Jazz Band Clinic and Concert that was held January 17 - 19th at Fontainebleau High School. The Mandeville Jr. High Band is directed by Ms. Jennifer Pulling.

Mandeville Junior High announced 8th Grader Lindsey Licciardi as the 2012-13 Student of the Year. Lindsey is very active in school activities by being a member of the basketball team, Talented Theater, National Junior Honor Society, Student Council and Life on Purpose.

First Place in Soccer

The Mandeville Junior High Boys' Soccer Team won first place in their division at the Rummel Invitational Tournament finishing undefeated. Slipper Drive

The Mandeville Junior High Student Council held a school wide slipper drive. The slippers were donated to a local nursing home. Pictured are Alexa Campbell, Rachel Butz, Chris Dalton, Bradley Bouton and John Landry. Mary Ruli is the faculty sponsor.

 

 

Pizza Party

The Mandeville Junior High PTA sponsored a fund raiser and held a pizza party for the students who sold the most cups. Hayden Moran, who sold 14 sets of cups, had his name drawn for the grand prize. He won a complete set of NFL cups and a $50 Visa gift card.

 

 

Cookie Cake Celebration

Band Fundraiser

Renaissance Festival

VFW Visit

PTA Spruce Up Day

Cultural Arts Festival

Mandeville Junior High elective teachers collaborated to host a Cultural Arts Festival to celebrate the Louisiana Bicentennial. Parents and students were invited to experience exhibits, performances and food that demonstrated cultural infusion in Louisiana. EXCEL Celebration

Seventh Grade

Mandeville Junior High recently held its 7th grade EXCEL celebration. The EXCEL program is a Positive Behavior and Support Intervention (PBIS) program to reward students with no lost instruction minutes. To be an EXCEL student there can be no to-school tardies, no check outs or no absences. Door prizes, frozen treats and an extended lunch were given to the 7th grade EXCEL students. French Club Performs Skit

Members of the Mandeville Junior High French Club performed a skit at Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual International Night on Monday, November 12th. The Department of Languages and Communication at the university sponsor the event, where groups and individuals perform works, representing aspects of various cultures. PBIS Person of the Month

Mandeville Junior High announced James Waguespack as the December PBIS Person of the Month. Mr. Waguespack lives the Fish Philosophy on a daily basis by being there, choosing his attitude, having fun and making someone's day! He was presented with a token gift of appreciation and he will enjoy the reserved parking spot in the front of the school for the month of December. Mexican Holiday

Food Drive

Teacher of the Year

Mandeville Junior High's 2012-13 Teacher of the Year is Tracey Martinez. Mrs. Martinez teaches 8th grade math, Algebra I and Gateway to Technology (GTT/ Robotics).   

 

Collegiate Cup Fundraiser

Veterans Day Poppies

Band Guest Instructor

Mandeville Junior High band members who play the French horn recently hosted a guest instructor. Retired St. Tammany Parish band instructor, John Guthans, worked with Madison Hutson and Henry Hunt. The Band Director at Mandeville Jr. High is Ms. Jennifer Pulling.

 

Bird Views

Mandeville Junior High students in Mary Ruli's Language Arts Classes completed a Creative Writing Project from a bird's point of view after reading "the Birds" by Daphne Du Maurier. Halloween Treats

Mandeville Junior High Student Council members passed out treats to students on Halloween. This is a part of the schools' PBIS Expectations of the FISH Philosophy and "Make Their Day." Rock Mining

Mandeville Junior High students enrolled in 8th grade Earth Science, experienced rock mining during an on campus field trip. Students classified the rocks and minerals after mining them. Pictured are Stella Miller and Addison Rosenau. The science teacher is Ann Stocker.

 

Pumpkin Decorating Day

Morstead Visits

Mandeville Junior High students on the 3.5 or higher Honor Roll had a very special guest speaker, Saints player, Thomas Morstead. He signed copies of the 2012 Saints yearbook for all 7th and 8th graders at the Honor Roll breakfast which is hosted quarterly by the Mandeville Junior High PTA. Gateway to Technology

Mandeville Junior High students in the Gateway to Technology Elective classes used historical methods of measurement including hand/span, cubit, girth, pace, palm and foot. The students are able to see the difference between precision and accuracy and can see the need for a universal measurement system. Pictured are Stone Dillon and Levi Howard measuring the width of the table using their individual measurement of a foot. GTT is taught by Mrs. Tracey Martinez.

The Mandeville Junior High Art Club and several faculty members met after school to create bowls for the Empty the Bowl/Fill the Bowl event to benefit the Samaritan Center. Guitar Lesson

Mandeville Junior High students participate in a guitar lesson during an elective taught by Jennifer Pulling. This year students will learn proper techniques for playing and caring for their guitars. Pictured are Preston Huffman, Austin Janes, and Stuart Marshall.

 

Talented Art Festival

Mandeville Junior High students in Talented Drama participated in the Talented Arts Program Festival at Koop Drive. Led by the instruction of their teacher, Anne Mohana, the students demonstrated Zydeco dancing. Pictured are Emily Burkhalter, Abigail Ezell and Madeline Trosclair.

Mock Presidential Election

Mrs. Natalie Scalia’s American History class  at Mandeville Jr. High School took part  in a mock presidential election sponsored the Louisiana Secretary of State. Shown here is Jason Colombo casting his ballot.

 

Teen Read Week

Mandeville Junior High ’ s Student Council and school Librarian, Stacey Milstead sponsored a local Teen Read Week.  Several activities were planned including a “ Read In ” and students being “ caught ” reading and “ booked. ” The National Teen Read Week is a program of the American Library Association to promote literacy.  Pictured are Mandeville Jr. High students,  Dustin Robinson, Hannah Hile, Skylar Schoen and Caroline Fisackerly at the Read In.  The Student Council faculty advisor is Mary Ruli.

 

 

Spherical Models

Mandeville Junior High students in Ms. Ann Stocker ’s 8th grade Earth Science classes created models of the four geological spheres, Atmosphere,  Hydrosphere , Lithosphere  and Biosphere.  Pictures are Catherine West, Ellie Stevens, Ms. Stocker, Haley Federer and Brittany Dugas.

 

Chemical Reactions

Mandeville Junior High students in Mrs. Ann Stocker's 8th grade Earth Science class learned about chemical reactions by combining various ingredients. Pictured are Paulette Madrigal, Demoni Boyd and Jordan Burke.

 

Gumbo Pot Exhibit

Mandeville Junior High 8th grade students in Mrs. Christy Nelson's Louisiana History class completed a Louisiana Culture Project. The students created three dimensional objects out of various media. Some of the projects will be displayed in the Mandeville Junior High Parish Fair booth entitled, "Louisiana: America's Gumbo Pot- 200 Years of Flavor." Columnist Visits Class

Mandeville Junior High students in Mrs. Watsey's 7th grade English class had a special guest speaker, Mr. James Varney who writes for the Times-Picayune. He will be authoring a column when the paper switches to three days per week. He has written about crime, sports, politics, and national affairs. Bowl Trip

Mandeville Junior High 8th grade Talented Art students took a trip to the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner. The school was awarded a grant from the Brown Foundation for the materials to create clay bowls. The students were invited to demonstrate how to make clay bowls that are sold at the "Empty the Bowl, Fill the Bowl" project. The Samaritan Center is MJH's service learning partner.
