You Are My Sunshine

Sergeant Jason O’Quinn of the Louisiana National Guard 1021 st visited the kindergartners and read the book You Are My Sunshine. After he shared the story, each kindergartner received a copy of the book to take home. Thank you, Sergeant O’Quinn, for sharing sunshine and literacy with our students.  


Third Grade Portrait

We are very proud of all the hard work our third graders have done all year. They will be celebrating with a few special events, including Louisiana Day, Market Day, and their Rite of Passage. We wish all of our 3 rd graders luck in their future endeavors and know they will continue to make us proud!

UP21 Foundation Fundraiser

Mandeville Elementary joined forces with the UP21 Foundation to raise awareness and opportunities for individuals with Down Syndrome. Students and teachers donated $1 and wore blue and yellow and jeans to support the foundation’s efforts.




Louisiana Lunch Week

Mandeville Elementary celebrated Louisiana Lunch Week March 4-8 with a creative contest. Students were invited to create a “mascot” using as many fruits and vegetables as they could. Some of the ideas turned in were a “banana man” made of a banana, cherry tomatoes, and a head of broccoli, an owl made of apples, spiders made of apples, oranges and lettuce, a caterpillar made of oranges, an apple and a black olives, and a crab made of apples and grapes. Students created their entries at home and shared them at lunch with classmates. Mardi Gras Parade

Mandeville Elementary's first grade held their annual school Mardi Gras parade around the school campus as part of their Louisiana Culture unit of study. Each classroom "krewe" designed costumes to reflect their theme. The different krewes included coffee and beignets, jazz musicians, king cakes, NOLA, Who Dats, crawfish, and New Orleans chefs. Leading the parade was 2011-12 teacher of the year Monica Campo, and 2012-13 teacher of the year, Stephanie Cade. The two enjoyed toasting king cakes together with Assistant Principal Eddie Strohmeyer and Principal Chantelle Smith. MES ’s recorder club provided musical entertainment by performing Second Line music led by music teacher Heidi Wight on trombone. Pre-K, Kindergarten, 2nd and 3rd graders enjoyed catching many throws from our 1st graders and their helpful parent and teacher assistants.




Substitute Appreciation Day

Beth Coe, one of our favorite substitutes, enjoying her complimentary lunch from the cafeteria on Substitute Appreciation Day at Mandeville Elementary.


Greece Lesson

On Friday, February 22 nd, students enjoyed a full day of activities to learn about the history, customs, and culture of Greece. Students learned traditional dances, enjoyed Greek food, painted a mosaic, and learned information about the history of the country.

Family Learning Night

On January 29th, Mandeville Elementary families gathered for a fun-filled, educational evening. Thanks to the many volunteers who spent numerous hours preparing, our annual Family Learning Night was another wonderful success. Students and parents enjoyed playing educational games, solving logic riddles, creating art projects, and sharing a delicious family dinner. Local author, Kim Hill, even visited to share her book, The Adventures of the Traveling Boots. We are already looking forward to next year!


Toy Drive Success

Mandeville Elementary held a Toy Drive in December to benefit children in our immediate area. Each 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grader was asked to earn money by doing chores around their house to purchase a toy. Over 350 gifts were collected and donated to the Mandeville Police Foundation which holds an annual Toy Giveaway for kids in Ward 4 of St. Tammany Parish. The Louisiana Air National Guard volunteers each year by picking up the toys from MES and other schools who participate and bringing them over to the Toy Giveaway.



PBS Congratulations

On Friday, December 14, all students who have consistently met the school-wide expectations for the second nine weeks were treated to cookies, milk, and a fun story about a Gingerbread man lost at school. We are very proud of the students for their polite and attentive behavior during the celebration and throughout the year. Each student’s big smile and “thank you” made our day! We are already looking forward to the next PBS celebration!

Winter Parties

On Wednesday, December 19, students at MES celebrated the ending of a wonderful first semester with winter parties. Parents and teachers organized learning and art centers for the students to participate in and created delicious, sweet treats for the students to enjoy. Everyone had a joyous time!



Yearbook Cover Artists

We are very excited to announce that Brooke Spalitta and Andrea Infante were chosen as the artists for our 2012-2013 Yearbook Cover. Great job!


Holiday Gift Shop

In the weeks leading up to the holiday break, students at Mandeville Elementary were able to use their hard earned allowances while visiting our “Holiday Gift Shop” to purchase gift items for family and friends. The MES PTA and volunteers work tirelessly each year to give our students the opportunity to learn about making choices, counting money, and experience the joy of giving to others.


Mellow Mushroom

Mellow Mushroom has generously partnered with Mandeville Elementary to help support our school. On Monday, November 26th, families visited with friends, played games, and enjoyed delicious pizza at the restaurant. Proceeds from the evening will help fund various projects PTA is supporting this year, including the Voyager tutoring program and IXL math. Here are a few photos from the event.

Clothespin Dolls

Mandeville Elementary students in Ms. Marlene Markel's third grade class pose with the clothespin dolls they created to represent the dress of their ancestors. Each student researched their family history, and created a doll in the dress of the country their ancestors emigrated from.

Red Ribbon Week

Mandeville Elementary students, faculty, and staff celebrated healthy living during Red Ribbon Week October 29-November 2, 2012. Activities were planned around a theme each day and included signing Red Ribbon Pledge on Monday, wearing pajamas to school for "Dream Big, Be Drug Free" on Tuesday, dressing up as their favorite storybook character for "Say BOO to Drugs" on Wednesday, wearing crazy socks for "Sock it to Drugs" on Thursday, and wearing favorite sports jersey or t-shirt for “Team Up Against Drugs" on Friday. Also on Friday, four members of the Mandeville High football team- Preston Winget-#45, Zach Boudreaux-#19, Patick West-#93 and DeLawrence Johnson-#57 came to morning meeting to encourage MES students about healthy living. They spoke to the kids about four different areas they focus on as high school athletes each day- academics, nutrition, exercise, rest. Students enjoyed visiting with the players after and asking questions.



Veterans Day

The entire MES community honored our veterans during a beautiful morning meeting program. The ceremony began with Cub Scouts Pack 111 posting the colors and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Next, the student body sang the National Anthem. Mrs. McNab and Mrs. Montreuil’s classes performed “God Bless America” with bells. After recognizing veterans in attendance, Captain Tommie Zenon, father of student Tariq Zenon and member of the Army National Guard 205 th Engineering Battalion, spoke to the students about ways they can honor our military each and every day. The ceremony ended with everyone singing a school favorite, “Oh, I Love America”. Thank you to all who were involved in the planning for this ceremony, as well as to all of the veterans for the sacrifices they make for our country.


Adventure Fest 2012

What fun we had at Adventure Fest 2012! So many people came out to join in the excitement on Saturday, November 10 at Mandeville Elementary’s annual celebration. Friends and families joined in with performances, games, music, food, silent auctions, and raffles. Thank you to all of the volunteers who made this year such a success! We are already looking forward to next year!


Black and Gold Day

To raise money to benefit the Children’s Museum of St. Tammany, students and teachers at Mandeville Elementary donated a dollar or more to show their spirit by wearing Black and Gold on Friday, November 9th. All of the support paid off with a donation of over $400 and a win for the Saints over the Falcons on Sunday night!

Storybook Character
Dress Up Day

As part of Red Ribbon Week, students said “BOO to Drugs” and dressed as their favorite storybook character. We had superheroes, fairytale characters, and silly animals all around campus. Everyone got into the fun by sharing their books and costumes with classmates and colleagues.


Sonic Night

On Wednesday, October 24 th, students, parents, and teachers from Mandeville Elementary gathered to enjoy a meal and fun games together at Sonic Restaurant on Highway 22. Sonic generously donated a portion of the proceeds to the Mandeville Elementary PTA to help fund various programs and experiences for the school community. The students had so much fun estimating with the “Guessing Jars”, drawing with sidewalk chalk, and earning FISH to share at morning meeting. Thank you to Sonic and everyone who was able to join us that night to help support our school!



United Way Fundraiser

The faculty, staff, parents, and students at Mandeville Elementary raised $4471.25 to donate to United Way this year. Each class who met their goal “forced” their teacher to wear pajamas to school. The teachers were certainly good sports for a good cause. All students were able to participate in a free dress day on Friday, October 19, for working so hard to reach our goal.




Wheel Appreciation

During the week of October 15 – October 19, students helped honor their bus drivers with small tokens of appreciation, including a sweet note, flowers, and donuts. The student-created banners showed our bus drivers that we “wheelie” appreciate all they do!


PBS Celebration Photos

Students were honored for making great choices all nine weeks with a popsicle PBS Celebration on Thursday, October 4th. Everyone got to share a sweet treat and a little extra outside time to celebrate a wonderful first quarter.

Open House

Mandeville Elementary hosted a fun family night at their annual Open House. Students enjoyed sharing special projects with their families and giving parents a tour of their classroom and school. Many students also loved going back to last year's teacher to say hello.

Grandparents Week

Mandeville Elementary celebrated Grandparents Week from September 10 – 14. Students invited their grandparents or someone special in their lives to join them in their classrooms to perform skits, complete art projects, and create memories. Visitors could also purchase PTA memberships and receive a complimentary commemorative photo to remember the day. A big thank you goes to the PTA for helping organize this worthwhile event each year.  Everyone involved had a wonderful time.

Meet and Greet

On Monday, August 6, parents, teachers, and students gathered at Mandeville Elementary to celebrate the beginning of another great school year. Students met their new teachers, visited with old friends, shared stories of their summers, and dropped off supplies for the first day of school. Everyone was all smiles with the excitement that comes along with the first day of school.

The Spalitta family, Caroline, Brooke, and Steven, enjoys visiting in the library to see all the new books available this year.
