Cultural Arts Day

a

To kick off Cultural Arts Day 2013, the class who won the school PTA spring fundraiser would “silly string” the school principal, Jeanine Barnes.  Kindergarteners in Connie Graf’s class covered Mrs. Barnes on the televised morning broadcast for the whole school to see.

 

PTA Award Presented

a

Jodi O’Berry’s stops to pose for a picture after being presented with a class award by the PTA President Annette Matthews and the Principal, Jeanine Barnes, for participating in the PTA Reflections Contest.  Her class was the only class in the school where each student participated by writing and drawing their entry.

 

Gifted Students

A few gifted students read, researched, and presented about these famous people.

Also, as a culminating activity students created a community for "Baloby" creatures - 5-8cm height & 2-3cm width.  They had to use measurement, perimeter, & area.

Community Day

Lyon Elementary School PTA sponsored a Community Day with several guests and services.  The Wellness Center conducted free blood pressure screenings; the St. Tammany Humane Society provided a few adoptions; Girls Scouts sold cookies; and there was a huge garage and bake sale.  Profits from the sales went to the PTA, and unsold items were donated to the Salvation Army.

Students from Sherrie Buras's third grade class researched and presented a famous African American and presented each day on the televised morning broadcast around the school during the month of February.

Our substitutes were given treat bags and able to enjoy some nice pastries during their lunch break.  And to welcome them was “WE LOVE OUR SUBS” on our reader board!

Beads Collected

Students at Lyon Elementary collected Mardi Gras beads during car line to donate to STARC.  Once again, over 1000 lbs of beads were collected for their second effort!

 

Leap Year

Pre-K students at Lyon Elementary School explained the Leap Year and Leap Day at the Spirit Day assembly on February 29 th. 100th Day Celebrated

Kindergarten students celebrate the 100 th day of school by wearing special glasses, shirts, and crowns made in the classrooms.

Principal for the Day

Principal Jeanine Barnes reviews her list of tasks with first grader Calli Mormon who sold the most items at the recent PTA fundraiser and won the honor of being Principal for the day. Together they observed classrooms, held duty in the cafeteria, and sat in on Whole Faculty Study Group meetings.

Penguin Research

 

Mrs. Walker's multi-age gifted class at Lyon Elementary has been studying a unit all about penguins. Students are working on research projects about penguins and reading literature novels and stories (Mr. Popper's Penguins, Tacky the Penguin, & Penguin Pete). A special visitor from the St. Tammany Parish Library, Tanya DiMaggio, brought in "Flippy Joe " - a Magellanic penguin on loan from the Audubon Zoo.

Artwork Appreciated

Tree Trimming

Several dozen students visited the Central Office in Covington to help decorate the front foyer tree with handmade ornaments.

 

Singing for Central

Students took to the stage in the Atrium at the Central Office in Covington recently to present a program of holiday songs.

 

Kiwanis Club Presentation

The Covington Kiwanis Club presented Lyon Elementary School with a large donation to assist with the giving project to needy families before the Christmas holidays. Field Trip To Museum

Lyon Elementary third graders visit the Maritime Museum and listen to Reed McClintock speak about the submarines and other artifacts in the museum.

STARC Community Project

Lyon Elementary School has partnered with STARC (St. Tammany Association of Retarded Citizens) where the goal is to provide Service, Training, Advocacy, Resources and Community connections for individuals with disabilities. One of their projects is recycling Mardi Gras beads and carnival throws. The beads that are donated to STARC are sorted, bundled, and sold by STARC clients to further support STARC programs. Each class is asked to bring in beads to donate to STARC, and the beads will be weighed and documented. At the end of collection time, the class that has collected the most beads by weight will win a PIZZA PARTY from STARC!!! Getting In The Mood

First grade teachers and staff get in the spirit at a recent school assembly. 

Garden Harvest

First grader Madison Boell harvests the first crop of bok choy from the Lyon Elementary Legacy School Garden. The crop of Chinese cabbage was cooked by the father of Lyon student Robin Zheng at his local restaurant, and served along with fried rice to four classes during lunch time.

Harvest Trophy

Technique and Color

Artist Sara Dunn, invited on October 20th by Lyon Elementary School art teacher Meghan Garcia, discusses technique and color with Corey Toney, Joshua Guichard, Yarah Samarah, and Isabella Russell from Ms. Quin’s kindergarten class. The finished two-piece mural will border Lyon Elementary School’s preschool digging garden. The playground garden is stocked with hand trowels and plastic artificial flowers that inspire daily landscaping experiments courtesy of an enthusiastic group of children at preschool recess.

Halloween Safety

Mayor Interviewed

Covington Mayor Mike Cooper was interviewed by Lyon Elementary School third grader reporters on September 23 for their 2011 St. Tammany Parish Fair booth.  The children asked him questions about life in Covington and St. Tammany Parish when he was a third grader.  He spoke to the children about government, population growth, traffic, schools, and the fun things to see and do.  Pictured around Mayor Cooper are Celeste Guidry, Hannah Kahoe, and Joshua Diaz.

Grandparents Lunch

Lyon Elementary School students honored their grandparents on September 23.  Grandparents enjoyed lunch with their grandchildren, played Bingo and partner games, and shared recess time.  Pictured are Marilyn Rome and second grader Tyler Rome.

Dictionary Resources

Once again Lyon Elementary School third graders received dictionary resource books from the Mandeville Republican Women’s group on August 24th.  The ladies went into each third grade classroom to deliver the gifts and presented a thirty minute lesson on using the dictionary and thesaurus features to answer questions and look for interesting trivia.  The children use these references throughout the school year in their classrooms lessons, for homework, and in preparation for the iLeap test in the spring. Suitcase for a Seed

 

 

First grade teachers at Lyon Elementary have instituted First Grade Fun Friday’s! Each Friday the teachers “dress up” in conjunction with their weekly story. On April 15th, the story was A Fruit Is A Suitcase For A Seed. While the students were busy planting bean sprouts and learning the parts of a plant along with the function of each, the teachers busied themselves preparing for Friday’s feature.
