Beacon Bash

a

Getting To Know

none

Lake Harbor recently held it’s "Getting to Know Lake Harbor Day." This is a day after school when students who will be entering 4th grade come and participate in activities throughout the school. The students are lead around the school by the 4th grade student council to activities run by the 4th grade teachers. Outstanding Middle School

Superintendent W. L. “Trey” Folse, III congratulates Principal Susan Patin, right, and PTA Unit President Becky Bohm, left, both with Lake Harbor Middle School, for winning the Outstanding Middle School Unit Award at the Louisiana State PTA Convention in Baton Rouge last month. The school’s PTA also won top honors for its website and newsletter. At the May 2 School Board meeting, Superintendent Folse presented them with a banner recognizing their achievement

Gold Medal Winners

The Louisiana State Elementary Fitness Meet took place Saturday, April 27, in Baton Rouge, bringing together contestants from parishes around the state. The St. Tammany Parish Public School System sent six students, "Team St. Tammany," to the event and placed sixth overall in the competition. Sierra Ballard (left) of Lake Harbor Middle School won a gold medal in pull-ups and Ivy (right) from Folsom Elementary won a gold medal in sit and reach. Congratulations girls!!

 

Evening with the Stars

Lake Harbor recently held its “Evening with the Stars”.  Parents and guests were invited to come spend the evening admiring student artwork and performances.  Pictured are Karley Bowers and Noah Roberts performing in Hamlet.

Art Adventure Day

Lake Harbor Middle School fourth and fifth graders enjoyed a Young Audience performance for Art Adventure Day by Casa Samba led by director Curtis Pierre. Performers included musicians Jorge Alabe, Marico Peers, Paul Guerra, and dancer Rhaina Coleman.

 

Fun Run

Lake Harbor had its “Fun Run” on Saturday.  After running a 1 mile race, students and their families were invited to play games and watch as the winners of the race put pies in the faces of The Principal and Assistant Principal.  Pictured are Gabriel Paredes Reyes, N. Talented Art Award

National Pi Day

In celebration of National Pi day (3/14) the gifted department at Lake Harbor Middle School held a PI Recital Challenge where the students competed to see who could recite the most digits of PI.  The first place winner won a PIE!! Support Personnel of the Year

Mayumi (Mickey) Treadaway was chosen as the Lake Harbor Middle School Support Personnel of the Year.  Mickey is a caring person who goes above and beyond to make sure that the students are successful.  Pictured are Mickey and Principal Susan Patin.

 

 

Substitute of the Year

Lake Harbor honored former State Trooper, Eric Durel, as the Lake Harbor Substitute of the Year.  Mr. Durel was chosen because of his dedication to the students of Lake Harbor.  He comes with a smile and makes a difference in the lives of the children he serves.

 

Living Wax Museum

Fifth grade Lake Harbor students in Ms. Dieck’s and Ms. Buras’ classes recently invited parents and students to their living wax museums.  The students did research on historical figures and then presented that information to invited guests while in character.  Students visiting the museum were given a treat as they went on a historical scavenger hunt using the information presented to find the items.

Black History Month

Bulletin boards were filled with photos, essays, and research reports about Black History Month.

Lake Harbor Middle School invited the Metro Pelican Opera to do a performance to celebrate Black History Month. Pictured are fifth graders Autumn Riley, Ella Rocha, Cullen Bivona, Jared Kerr, Stevie Richard, Christophe Boegel and a presenter from the Opera.  Students were treated to songs composed by African Americans and given the history of Opera in New Orleans.

 

A Table for 22

Students in Mrs. Thurber's class deepened their understanding of measurement by applying math to solve problems in everyday life.  Students identified and described the properties of two-dimensional figures, while designing a thanksgiving table with the greatest space for food.  This lesson help connect the relationship between perimeter and area.

 

Mardi Gras Music

Limo Ride

NFL Experience Show

Students from Lake Harbor Middle School took part in a special world premiere of a Nicktoons program in the theater at the NFL Experience in New Orleans on January 31. They were shown the upcoming Superbowl Sunday episode of “Rush Zone: Season of the Guardians,” to be broadcast on Nicktoons. The video features NFL Players in a superhero adventure battling an evil robot that is trying to destroy the Superbowl in New Orleans. The students met NFL players, received bags with Superbowl souvenirs, and toured the games and exhibits at the NFL Experience in the Morial Convention Center.

Safety Poster Contest

District Winners

100th Day of School

Bird Beak Buffet

While studying animal adaptations the Lake Harbor Middle School fourth grade students in Mrs. Peterson's class enjoyed the Bird Beak Buffet.  The students used different instrument to mimic bird beaks and tried to decide what foods these birds eat based on prior knowledge and beaks.

 

Students Raise Funds
For Caps for Kids Day

Thousands of students across the St. Tammany Parish Public School System wore their favorite cap on Friday, January 25, in a fund-raising event for “Caps for Kids.” Pictured are just a few of the students at Lake Harbor Middle School who took part in the event. Students and faculty donated a dollar or more to the New Orleans-based program that provides celebrity-autographed caps for kids with life-threatening illnesses such as cancer.

Speakers Review Career
Choices For Sixth Graders

Several recent Career Day speakers outlined the wide variety of employment opportunities for young people today. Career Day programs are encouraged by state legislation called “Career Options” to increase student awareness of the careers that are available.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Cheryl Arabie spoke to several classes about what she does and how her love of reading has helped her throughout her career.

Mandeville Mayor Don Villere, a former School Board member, gave classes an overview of the variety of things he does each day, and he was also interviewed by students from the school’s Broadcasting Class. Click here for an audio file of Mayor Villere's presentation.

At left is Douglas Miller, senior director of communications for the New Orleans Saints, and at right is Frank Smith, who talked about civil and mechanical engineering. The students took notes, asked questions, and came away with a wide range of ideas what careers they, themselves, might be interested in pursuing.

Educator of Distinction

McTeachers Night

McDonalds hosted “ Mc Teachers” night for Lake Harbor Middle school students.  Fifth grade teachers were on hand at McDonalds making shakes, selling cookies and pies and helping make the evening fun for the students who came to eat.  A portion of the sales is being donated to Lake Harbor. Cafeteria Drawing

Lake Harbor’s cafeteria held a drawing for students to win a basket full of goodies.  Each time a student ate breakfast in the cafeteria, their name was entered in the drawing to win the prize.  Pictured are Cafeteria Manager Debbie Peralta and winner,  Georgia Clare.

Lake Harbor’s cafeteria held a drawing in the month of October.  Savannah Perry from Ms. Mataconis’ class was selected and won a cauldron full of goodies.

Lake Harbor is proud to name Cora Alden from Mrs. Sexton’s class as Student of the Year.  A fifth grade student is chosen, each year, who is dedicated to making education and service to the community a priority in their young life.   She is shown at right with Principal Susan Patin.

Train of Hope

Lake Harbor students recently took part in the Train of Hope Project which is sending a load of donated toys, relief supplies, and letters of encouragement to areas affected by Superstorm Sandy

One of the organizers of the project, Donna O'Daniels, said “We all remember the outpouring of support after Hurricane Katrina and how much those notes of encouragement from all over the country meant to us and our kids. It really lifted our spirits, so we thought our kids helping their kids would be a great idea.” Those notes from Louisiana will be distributed by School Systems throughout the areas of New York and New Jersey affected by the storm.

The first Train of Hope effort, organized in early November in St. Tammany Parish, brought a boxcar full of needed supplies up to affected areas with the help of Amtrak, many generous individuals and volunteers. The Holiday Train of Hope will leave December 14th.

Bear Jaw

Fifth Grade students were treated to a visit from the Big Branch Refuge from whom students learned about classification of local wildlife skulls.  With their bear jaw are Ella and Emily from Ms. Buras’s class.

 

International Feast

 Fourth graders did a project on their ancestors and then held an International Feast for the entire grade level, including parents!

 

Molecules

Students in Ms. Buras’s class studied the Periodic Table, atoms, elements, compounds, etc.  Student made 3-D models of the molecular structure of one molecule of a compound using marshmallows.  Pictured is Dominic with his model of table sugar.

 

 

Saint Camp

LHMS held a “Biggest Loser” contest for the United Way Campaign.  The “Biggest Loseer” (Winner) was fourth grade, and they were treated to a visit from the Junior Saints Training Camp.

  Students in Ms. Mallory’s Community Education scrapbooking class made scrapbooks about themselves.

 

Veterans Day

LHMS held a ceremony to honor our veterans for Veterans Day.  The talented music and theater classes performed, a high school color guard visited, and we had honored speakers.

Beacon Bash & Blast Off

Lake Harbor recently celebrated Positive Behavior at the Beacon Bash and Blast Off.  These events are held once per nine weeks to celebrate positive behavior.  Parents and teachers work together to run the activities for the children.  Pictured are Celeste Townsend, Talia Thomas, and Hope Von Eberstein.

 

Stage Make Up Lesson

SLU theatre graduate, Amanda Klipsch, applied stage make up to sixth grade talented theatre students in Debbie Knick's classroom at Lake Harbor Middle School to enhance the character they play in Da 3 Nutria and Dat Ole Gruff Gator, an original play which will be presented at the Talented Arts Program Bicentennial Celebration on Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 10 AM - 2 PM at Tammany Trace Kids Town Pavilion at Koop Drive in Mandeville, LA.   Admission is 5$ for Adults and 1$ for Children.  This will be a fun festival atmosphere complete with food, games, make and take art, as well as entertainment and art presented by St. Tammany Parish Talented Art, Theatre and Music students.

 

Flapjacks

Lake Harbor Middle School teacher Mrs. Adeline Rutherford treated her fifth grade class to hot "flapjacks" made by PTA members, Brandy Donaldson and Nikki Epps. The students read the tall tales of Paul Bunyan, created a story matrix, and wrote their own tall tales. Pictured are Nadia Alzoqari and Creed Donaldson.

Two Honored
by School Board

Lake Harbor has the honor and privilege of honoring two of their own.  Susan Patin was named the St. Tammany Middle School Principal of the Year.  Mande’ Warren was named the Middle School Teacher of the Year for both St. Tammany Parish and the State of Louisiana.  Way to go!!!

Lake Harbor welcomed some very special visitors to school this October.  Grandparents were invited to come eat  lunch with their grandchildren this month.  Pictured is Jake LeBoeuf with his grandparents.

 

Lake Harbor held grandparents day this month.  Pictured are Diane Wehrman, Eric Durel, Gwen Moree, and Debbie Peralta.  Volunteering were Ms. Wehrman along with Mr. Durel.  Mr. Durel is the grandfather of Samantha Mitchell, a sixth grader here at Lake Harbor.

Student Council Elected

These are the Lake Harbor Student Council school wide representatives for the 2012-2013 school year.  Elections were held on Patriots day.  The class representatives, chosen in their classrooms through elections,  each gave a speech to the entire grade level and displayed posters throughout the school.  The students in each grade level then went to their rooms and voted.  The following students were then chosen to represent each grade. Pictured with Principal Mrs. Patin are: Doris Igrec, Jack Menard, Cory Koeing, Kayla DeOliveira, Ashton Ebert and Becca Preston.

Kelly Cook Grants
Given To Six Teachers

Lake Harbor faculty members were awarded six of the nine Deborah Rochelle Teacher Grants awarded to St. Tammany Parish Public School educators August 23. Superintendent W. L. "Trey" Folse, III, visited our first day Faculty Meeting to present Mande Warren with a framed newspaper front page announcing her winning the Louisiana Middle School Teacher of the Year Award for 2012.
