Recognition

A teacher at Lake Harbor Middle School in Mandeville, Amanda Warren, was named the 2013 Middle School Teacher of the Year July 20 by the Louisiana Department of Education. She is pictured above at right with her plaque, being congratulated by Superintendent W. L. "Trey" Folse, III. Nearly 300 educators were honored during the sixth annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebration in Baton Rouge.

Principal's Award

Lake Harbor Middle school recognized Jaylen Brumfield with the Principal’s Award Winner for the Fourth Grade. This award is given to a student from each grade level who demonstrates outstanding character, leadership ability and overall academic perseverance. Teacher Honored

Community Partner Blue Bell Creameries honored Lake Harbor Middle School Grade 4 teacher Mande’ Warren at our PBS End of the Year Social.  Mande’ is the 2012-2013 Lake Harbor Teacher of the Year, St. Tammany Parish Middle School District Teacher of the Year, and  Region II Middle School Teacher of Year.  She will go on to the state completion this summer.  Pictured from left to right  is Blue Bell Creameries Territory Manager Chris Mitchell, Mande’ Warren, and Territory Manager Tony Page.

Lake Harbor Middle School congratulates DAR winner Aleisha Magee. Pictured is DAR representative Kathy Goertzen and Aleisha. Teachers were asked to select an individual who showed good citizenship qualities such as honesty, high principles, true Americanism, and truthfulness. Service to the school or community, individual responsibility, leadership qualities, sportsmanship, and positive peer interaction was also equally considered.

World Culture Discussed

Lake Harbor Middle School student Dylan O'Connelll and his mom Tami at sixth grade World Culture day where Mrs. O'Connell shared her experiences, heritage and culture from Israel. The students thoroughly enjoyed the presentation complete with pictures, history, geography and home movies.

Country Mouse, City Mouse

On Thursday, April 26, Talented Theatre Classes at Lake Harbor Middle School performed plays, scenes and monologues at the school’s annual art show, Evening with the Stars.  Starring in The Country Mouse and The City Mouse are fifth grade talented theatre students, Kinsey Chabreck and Summer Seal. Debbie Knick directs the students.

 

Student Recognized

Litter Monster

Lake Harbor Talented Art students participated in the Litter Monster Poster contest for Keep Mandeville Beautiful.  Pictured are Ms. Dooley, John Booth (First Place Winner), Grace Stewart (2nd place) and Kierstin Bauman. Chocolate Success

A D.J. party was held at Lake Harbor Middle School to celebrate the success of our chocolate fundraiser. The money raised will be used to purchase new technology for the school.  Students who sold 2 or more cases of chocolate were invited to dance the afternoon away while eating popsicles and smoothies.  Pictured are Lauren Pierce and Jordan Arabie.

Support Person of the Year

Lake Harbor Middle School is proud to announce Konnie Knight as the support person of the year. Ms. Knight is very active within the school and always follows the fish philosophy! We are so proud to have her as one of our own!

LHMS PTA is proud to announce our school had five State Reflections Contest winners. Riley Audsley won in the Photography category and Emma Ebert, DJ Frederick, Alexis Gonzalez, and Sophie Ebert won in the Visual Arts category. Congratulations to them!

Jerseys for Jeremy

Marble Kinetics

Lake Harbor Middle School Fifth Grade students from Ms. Andrea Starnes’ class worked together to design a poster board roller coaster to show the kinetic and potential energy of a marble as it traveled the track. This design was the most creative in the class.

Balloon Racers

Ms. Buras’s 5 th grade class studied Newton’s Laws of Motion and experiences the third law first hand by creating Balloon Car Racers!  The law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  It worked!! The balloon’s air released in one direction and propelled our racers in the opposite direction!

Living Wax Museum

Fifth grade students in Suzanne Buras' class put on a production about biographies by setting up a "Living Wax Museum."  Students created display boards about a famous person they read about, dressed up as that person, and prepared a monlogue.  The museum was open for parents, friends, and other 5th grade students.  Visitors pressed a button by each famous person so that the "wax figure" came to life and told about themselves.  Visitors were given a scavenger hunt with questions about each of the famous people in the museum.  They had to listen and read about each person to find the answers.  Close to 300 people attended the 2 1/2 hour presentation.

DARE Graduates

Lake Harbor Middle School fifth grade students recently completed the DARE program.  Students were asked to write an essay about what they learned from DARE.  Essay winners were chosen from each class. Safety Poster Winners

Lake Harbor Middle School would like to congratulate District PTA Safety Poster winners Timothy Doell, Hillary Bohm, and Sarah Fayard.  The theme of the contest was “At Work, At Play, Let Safety Lead the Way!”  These students will attend a District  PTA banquet in the Spring.   Sarah Fayard will go on to the state competition in the spring.

 

Reflections Contest

Lake Harbor Middle School would like to congratulate the following students for their partipation in the PTA Reflections contest. The theme was “ Diversity Means…”. These winners will be recognized at a PTA District banquet in March. Some of these students will compete at the state level. Gingerbread Houses

Students in Mrs. Rutherford's fifth grade class at Lake Harbor Middle School created gingerbread houses during Art. Students enjoyed using candy canes, gumdrops, marshmalllows and more to decorate their houses. International Feast

Lake Harbor Middle School fourth graders recently participated in an International Feast where students and parents studied their ancestory. Students sampled foods from many nations.  Pictured are student Colby Creel and his mother Stacy Creel.

Mini Grants Awarded

Each year Lake Harbor Middle School PTA awards two $500 Mini Grants to teachers. This year many outstanding grant proposals were received for review. The recipients of this year's grants are Fifth grade teacher Ms. Salzer for a grant to purchase TouchMath Kits and Fifth grade teachers Ms. Bynum and Ms. Rutherford for a grant to purchase FROG System Learning games. Contest Winners

Lake Harbor Middle School students recently participated in the United Way campaign. The Biggest Loser contest winners were the sixth grade students. To reward their efforts the Saints organization treated the sixth graders to Saints Camp at Lake Harbor. Honor Chorus Auditions

The following students auditioned for and were chosen for the District 9 Elementary Honor Chorus.  They will perform in January. Veterans Day

Fanfare Art Contest

Food Drive Held

LHMS PTA held a Food Drive for the Samaritan Center the last two weeks in October. Most food banks in the area are empty. An overwhelming number of food items were sent in. Grandparents Lunch

Students at Lake Harbor Middle School enjoyed a special day by having lunch with their grandparents at school. Roberta and Ray Michot liked the opportunity to take a photo with their 5th grade granddaughter, Kylie Reed.

Egyptian Travel

Community Partners:  Lake Harbor Middle School student Michael Deluca is pictured with his mother Nina Dean.  Ms. Dean shared her experiences from her visit to Egypt with the class as part of a unit on Ancient Egypt. 

Random Pizza

Lake Harbor Middle School students from Ms. Curstine Melan's Sixth Grade class is participating this year in the Random Acts of Pizza program. This is a nationwide program in which donors can send a pizza to people who are down and cannot feed themselves. It is a simple act that has a big impact. The students performed chores to earn money to donate to the purchase the pizzas. As a result of their hard work pizzas were sent to families in Tennessee, Virginia, and California. Early American Feast

Lake Harbor Middle School fifth grade students from Ms. Andrea Starnes’ room participated in a  Social Studies Early American Feast.  The Weber family visited Colorado last year and purchased Ansazi beans . The  feast represented foods from early American cultures and modern day life in North America. Students ate beans, rice, cornbread muffins, pumpkin cookies, and candy corn served with apple juice. Adaptations Explained

Recently Kim Bynum’s 5th grade class, of Lake Harbor Middle School, had a presentation from Mandeville Public Works on adaptations. They had a visit from their new class pets “Tia Beaver” and “Albert Alligator.” Tia Sheppard, left, and Brian D’Jesus demonstrate the adaptations beavers and alligators have in order to survive in their habitats.

Computer Tech In Residence

LHMS PTA is excited to announce the Computer Tech in Residence program has started. Mr. Ryan Reich will be teaching the students four lessons in the computer lab. Presently the classes were taught how to create characters with motion and how to make games with animation. Soon more advanced games will be taught. Family Learning Night

Lake Harbor Middle School recently held its annual Family Learning Night.  Students and their families attend a fun filled night of activities.  This year’s theme was Passport to Learning.  Pictured are volunteer helpers from the Fontainbleau High School’s National Honor Society Jake Chapman and Katie O’Donnell helping Brian Zoerner with an origami project.

Box Top winners


Lake Harbor Middle School tallied the results to its Summer Box Tops collection contest. Thousands of Box Tops were turned in to raise money for the school! The six grade students pictured collected over 2800 Box Tops and are the top collectors for the contest. Putting Together Artifacts

Lake Harbor Middle School students Sarah Induni, Joey Piwko, and Doris Igrec work as archaeologists to piece together artifacts in Social Studies class. Students in Mrs. Starnes’ Social Studies class were simulating what it felt like to find pieces of objects once used by a people group and then attempt to put the object back together.

Jacob and Gumbo

Jacob Cross, 6th grade student at Lake Harbor Middle School, was chosen by Whitney Bank as the Saints Junior Captain for the Saints’ game on August 12th against the 49ERS. Jacob got a chance to mingle with the players and Gumbo on the sidelines before and during the game. Whitney Bank and Lake Harbor are partners in the Bank at School Program where students can deposit money once a month into their own bank account.
