Awards Ceremony

Folsom Jr. High celebrated the achievements of its 8th grade class during an awards ceremony. 

Payton Haynes received the District Attorney's citizenship award.  Payton is presented the award by Howard Bartholomew, Walter Reed's representative.


Ashley Bruhl is presented a plaque for student of the year.  Ashley is pictured with Sharon Garrett, Folsom Jr. High's principal.

Veronica Husak received Folsom Jr. High's highest honor, the Greenwood Award, for having the highest grade point average during her years in junior high.  Presenting the award to Veronica is Sharon Garrett, principal.

Earth Day

Folsom Jr. High's 8th grade class, led by science/history teacher Phyllis Beatty,  organized an Earth Day celebration for the entire school with activities to reinforce the message to keep our planet clean and beautiful.  Students participated in different stations such as: scavenger hunts, Louisiana bingo, seed planting, face painting, cookie decorating, and a small petting zoo with baby chicks, a baby turkey, rabbits, and a gerbil.

 

Hawk Heroes

Folsom Jr. High recently held an assembly to recognize outstanding students. 

Hawk Heroes for the month of April are 8th graders, Tayler Huval and Alysea Castillo.

Top Fund Raiser

Diedre Perkins, Student Council Sponsor, recognized Zhymeria Watson as the top fund raiser for the Muscular Dystrophy's Shamrock Sale.  Zhymeria received a certificate and t-shirt from the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation.

Perfect Attendance Breakfast

Louisiana School Lunch Week

In preparation for Louisiana School Lunch Week (March 12 - 16), students in Phyllis Beatty's science classes made blueberry ice cream in Ziploc bags.  Students learned that blueberries (the focused product for March 12th) are high in antioxidants and a good source of fiber and Vitamin C.  They also learned the science behind how salt decreases the temperature of water and ice when mixed together.  Pictured working on their ice cream experiment are Abigail Eckhardt and Ashley Bruhl.

Folsom Jr. High celebrated Louisiana School Lunch Week with a skit performed by strawberry (Ashley Bruhl) and blueberry (Alexis Wright) detailing each fruit's wonderful qualities.

Special Recognition

Folsom Jr. High recognized its students during a special morning assembly in March. 

The Hawk Heroes for the month are Lauren Giarratano and Brittany Choate.

Science Review

Michael Cross, a student in Phyllis Beatty's science classes, explains to Kelly Cook representatives how the probes and hand-held interfaces that they received through a Kelly Cook grant work during an experiment.

Plants Presented

Students in Phyllis Beatty's science classes present the Kelly Cook Foundation representatives with plants as a token of their appreciation for the grant that provided them with Vernier probes and hand-held interfaces for use in experiements.

Black History Program

Joseph Pardela, Paul McClain, Jr., and Troilaina Jones join speaker, Ryan Perkins, for a demonstration during the Black History Program.

Ryan Perkins with his mom, Diedre Perkins.  Ryan is a former student of Folsom Jr. High, and is now a teacher and coach at Northlake Christian, and a published author.  Mrs. Perkins is Folsom Jr. High's 8th grade English teacher, student council sponsor, and chairwoman for the annual Black History Program.

Black History Essay

During Folsom Jr. High's Black History Program, Ashley Cook, an 8th grader in Diedre Perkins's English class was presented with an award for an essay which she submitted to the Greater Covington Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest.  Ashley won 2nd place overall.  Pictured are Mrs. Perkins and Ashley.

Basketball Trophies

Honor Roll Breakfast

During honor roll breakfast, three lucky students were recipients of gift cards donated by Jack Loup, Folsom Jr. High's school board representative.  The three students are John Toca, Destani Welch, and Madison Lampo.

Rug Weaving

Students in Folsom Jr. High's Family and Consumer Science class used primary sources to learn about rug weaving.  The students used recycled t-shirts and hula hoops to weave their own rugs.  Pictured are Caroline Fussell and Mark Danko.

 

Student of the Year

Folsom Jr. High would like to congratulate Ashley Bruhl, our 8th grade Student of the Year.  Ashley is the daughter of Ines and Richard Bruhl of Folsom.  She is the Vice President of 4-H, Secretary of Student Council, and a yearbook staff member.

Crafting Boxes

Recites Poem at Ceremony

Dejeune Richardson recited the poem "The Power of I" at the January 9 Inauguration Ceremonies held at the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center. Mexican Holiday Tradition

Eighth Grade students in Jennifer de la Garza's Spanish classes participated in Mexican holiday traditions as part of their class lessons.  One of the holiday traditions they experienced was the breaking of the pinata.  Pictured are Lindsey Saacs, Ashley Bruhl, Bria Bickham, and Jimmarquan Perry.

New Orleans Field Trip

To enhance the Louisiana History curriculum, the 8th grade students at Folsom Jr. High annually visit places in Louisiana to get a first-hand account of the subjects they learn about. This semester the students visited New Orleans. They toured St. Louis Cathedral, the Cabildo, the French Quarter, and the Riverwalk. The students also took a tour of the Mississippi River on the Steamboat Natchez.

Cookie Skulls

As part of a lesson on the Mexican holiday, Los Dios de los Muertos, students in Jennifer de la Garza’s Spanish classes at Folsom Jr. High created sugar skulls using cookies and colored icing.  Pictured working on the skulls: de la Garza, Sydney Duzac, Lindsey Saacks, and Jada Danko.

Re-creating Cells

 

Ray Core’s 7 th grade science students at Folsom Jr. High are learning about the parts of plant and animal cells.  To demonstrate their understanding, the students had to recreate the cells using various food products.

School Lunch Decorations

Courtney Dominique’s Art classes at Folsom Jr. High helped to decorate the new cafetorium for National School Lunch Week. The students created a vine to hang around the stage with fruits and vegetables hanging from it. Dunking Booth

Faith Cothran, Folsom Jr. High’s Student Council Vice President, flinches as she watches the ball head to its target. Faculty, staff, and student body leaders agreed to participate in a dunking booth as part of the No Discipline reward for the school’s Positive Behavior Support program.

Creating Art From Nature

Courtney Dominique’s art students at Folsom Jr. High used items from nature to create art. The students used such things as sticks, stones, leaves, etc…to make pictures on the playground. Fair Booth Work

Folsom Jr. High 8th graders Lexi Wright and Abigail Eckhardt work on their contribution to the school’s fair booth, “Plenty to See from A to Z.” The students in Louisiana History created and decorated letters depicting things you can find in Louisiana. The school won a first place ribbon for its booth.

2011-2012 Teacher of the Year

Folsom Jr. High is proud to announce its 2011-2012 teacher of the year, Linda Newman, and support staff member of the year, Cheryl Barker.  Mrs. Newman teaches special education and home economics, and Ms. Barker is a paraprofessional.

Duke Talent Search


Folsom Jr. High recently congratulated some of its students for high scores on the iLEAP test that qualified them for participation in the Duke University Talent Search Program. The students will be eligible to take the ACT early through this program. Science As Inquiry Project




Folsom Jr. High 8th graders are working on “Science as Inquiry” projects in Phyllis Beatty’s earth science classes. The students work in teams to perform experiments and chart their findings to share with the rest of the class. Pictured are: Michael Cross, Chelsey Garza, and Myia Bivins.

Rep. Schroder Visit

Representative John Schroder recently visited Folsom Jr. High to discuss Louisiana government and the political process with 8th grade Louisiana history students.
