2014 Superintendent’s Award
Goes To John Wondergem

l

Special education teacher John Wondergem won The Superintendent's Award for Outstanding Character and Citizenship this year as the award was announced at the May 15 School Board meeting in Covington by Superintendent W. L. “Trey” Folse, III.

The Superintendent's Award was created in 2003 to honor people and programs within the School System for showing outstanding character and citizenship at their individual schools or support sites.

Wondergem was praised for his “above and beyond” attitude. A video produced by Channel 13 showcased his work with his students. In the video, his principal Lesa Bodnar commended him for his commitment and passion in his work every day. “His character epitomizes what a principal looks for in a teacher,” she said. Click here to view the video.

“You truly live out our motto of ‘Every child, every day,” Superintendent Folse told Wondergem. He received a $750 check from Capital One Bank and plans to use the money to buy supplies for his classroom.

He was nominated for the award for his encouragement and dedication which instills hope and a desire to succeed in his students. He has been a foster parent for more than ten years and had worked to raise over $15,000 annually to conduct a summer camp for children in foster care. As a testament to his compassion, Wondergem even donated a kidney to a child who attends his church and is not related to him, Ms. Bodnar stated.

After receiving the award, Wondergem said he appreciated the recognition and the check, and he said it was a privilege to have the opportunity to serve kids.
