Soccer Awards

Covington High School's Boys Soccer Team recently held their end of the year awards banquet. At the banquet, seniors Tyler Plumb and Zack Kidder were selected as Team Captains. Pictured from left are Plumb and Kidder.

Key Club Members

Covington High School's Key Club recently selected their March Members of the Month. Selected were sophomores Hewson Knight and Alex Hatcher. Alex currently serves as the club secretary and has over 40 service hours for the year. Hewson currently has over 60 service hours and was recently selected to serve as the club vice president for next year.


March, 2012

All State Team

Five Covington High School student athletes were recently named to the Class 5A Academic All State Team.  Pictured in the photograph are (from left to right) Shakyra Cooper (Girl’s Track), Raquel Ingles (Girl’s Softball), Zachary Kidder (Boy’s Soccer), Tiffany Warren (Girl’s Basketball and Softball), and Allison Ostendorf (Girl’s Soccer).  Ostendorf additionally received the prestige of being named Composite Academic All State.

Poetry Out Loud

Covington High senior, Maria Hefte, participated in the St. Tammany Parish Poetry Out Loud Competition. She received first place. She will be traveling to Baton Rouge to participate in the State Poetry Out Loud Competition. Additionally, she placed first in the state of Louisiana for the Shakespeare Competition and will be competing in New York for the National Shakespeare Competition on April 23, 2012.

Mona Nasawri, a Covington High School senior, competed in the St. Tammany Parish Poetry Out Loud Competition. She received third place. She will be traveling to Baton Rouge to participate in the State Poetry Out Loud Competition.

Writing Contests

Two Covington High School seniors, Jeremy Collins and Josie Gaitan, participated in English Day at Southeastern Louisiana University on Tuesday March 20, 2012. They competed in writing contests throughout the day. Jeremy Collins (right) participated in the creative writing contest and placed first. Josie Gaitan (left) participated in the expository writing contest and also placed first.

Teacher of the Year

Gary Mendoza, Theatre teacher at Covington High School, was awarded as Covington High School’s teacher of the year for the 2012-2013 school year. He also advanced to St. Tammany Parish finals for teacher of the year in the high school division.

Support Person of the Year

Rhonda Buisson, secretary at Covington High, was awarded Covington High School’s support staff for the 2011-2012 school year. She was also awarded as St. Tammany Parish Support Staff of the year for her dedication and service to Covington High.

Substitute of the Year

Melissa Robinson was awarded as Covington High School’s substitute of the 2011-2012 school year. Additionally, she received the award for Parish Substitute of the Year for her service to Covington High.


Books and Blankets

Covington High School student Jessie Wilder, vice-present of the Reading Club, is pictured reading a book to Head Start students as a part of the Books and Blankets event. Covington High School Reading Club began this program last year with the donation of 126 blankets and numerous books. This year’s club members bought material to make 112 blankets and bought a children's book for each class.

Theatre Master Class

Dodd Loomis, a New York Broadway stage director, discusses one of his latest projects with Covington High School's music and theatre students. He was in town finalizing work on a new film project, and contacted his former teacher, Dr. Ric Watkins (seated on stage), who planned the master class for the students. Multiple theatre productions have taken Loomis to over 150 national and international cities.

Bake Sale Fundraiser

Covington High School's Key Club recently held a bake sale to raise fund for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  Along with selling shamrocks all month the club will have several bake sales to raise funds for the cause.  Pictured are club members Tyler Plumb and Chandler DeJean selling baked goods at lunch.

Poet Shares Selections

Covington High School was privileged to welcome author, poet Naomi Shibab Nye.  Ms. Nye visited with a small group of students where she read selections from three of her books and spoke about her life as a writer.  Students were able to ask questions about her poetry, the art of writing, and publishing.  Ms. Nye’s visit was arranged as part of an outreach program of the National English Honor Society.

CHS Child Development
Class visits MES

Ms. Judy Helmstetter's Kindergarten class at Madisonville Elementary had the opportunity to have Covington High School's Child Development class come teach her students some fun filled projects. In this photo are Brooke Reimonenq, Monica White and Lola Reed.


Band Plays On

Two students from Covington High took part in a brass ensemble that performed during the January 9 Inauguration Ceremonies for Parish Officials held at the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center in Covington. They were Ashley Johansen and Hali Triche and are shown above as part of the group being conducted by Fred Wild.

Thumbs Up

At Covington High School’s Homecoming Game, students and their parents participated in Allstate Insurance’s national campaign entitled Thumbs UP to X the TXT.  Allstate set up a tent where teens and their parents added their thumbprint to a banner as a symbol of their pledge to not text and drive.  Upon pledging, participants received a thumb band to wear as a daily reminder of their commitment.  Pictured taking the pledge are Covington High Band members Phillip Hyde, Lynsey Braud, Mallory McKenzie, Danielle Tyrney, Matthew Kennedy, Sarah Harris, Carlos Mendez, and Erica Reine. 

CHS Key Club

Covington High School’s Key Club recently volunteered at the 1st Annual Lancaster Elementary Fall Festival titled “Land Ho Lancaster”. Club members helped in the set-up of booths and worked different booths throughout the event. Pictured are cousins Elise Benezech, club member, and Drake Perez, Lancaster student.

Chef Jan

Covington High School ProStart students looked on as Chef Jan fabricated a chicken. The ProStart students will have to fabricate a chicken for the Louisiana Restaurant Association High School Culinary competition this spring. Geaux Pink

Covington High School's Foreign Language Club and Key Club recently teamed up to Geaux Pink for the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital by assisting customers for tips at the Covington Winn Dixie.  Pictured are Drew Crawford and Maria Hefte.




Ambassador Council

Several members of Covington High School’s class of 1976 presented to the Ambassador Council a donation of $1200 toward the Centennial Bell Tower. Ashley Johansen

Violinist Ashley Johansen will represent Covington High School at the LMEA All-State Orchestra Music Festival in Baton Rouge in November. 

Glue lab 2

In Ms. Clayton’s Biology II class at Covington High School, Katie Legere, Ashlan Vercher, and Ashley Bordes learned how to make glue by denaturing milk proteins. 



Commissioner Mike Strain spoke to students from Covington High School’s  Journey to Careers and Agriculture classes about careers in the agriculture field.  In his presentation, Commissioner Strain showed the students the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry website, talked about life in politics, and answered any questions from the audience.

Oui! Oui!

Covington High students in Ms. Bernstein's French II classes choose a famous Parisian monument or landmark to research. They presented their information to the class, including the history and cultural value of their site, using different visual aids. These students made 3D models of their monuments. Covington High Band, Color Guard Open Fair
The 2011 St. Tammany Parish Fair opened its 102nd annual festivities in late September with ceremonies featuring the Covington High School Band and CHS ROTC Color Guard. The band marched in the parade, and the Color Guard presented the flag during the playing of the national anthem.

Microsoft Certification

Covington High School students in Mrs. Margaret O’Connell’s Introduction to Business Computer Applications class, are becoming proficient using Microsoft Word. At the end of the semester, each student will take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exam and become nationally certified and job ready for employment. School Spirit

Covington High School is showing their school spirit this week as they cheer the Fighting Lions on to victory. On Wednesday, the CHS cheerleaders visited community businesses and showed their Lion Pride by decorating the storefronts in anticipation for this week’s game against St. Paul. Key Club Member of the Month

The Covington High School Key Club recently selected its September Member of the Month.  Junior and Vice President Josh Calamia was chosen based on the 25 service hours he amassed and his perfect attendance at all Key Club Events in September.


Monteleone Technology Grant

Covington High teacher Kassie Dasher is the recipient of the L.P. Monteleone Technology Grant. Her winning activity called Sound, Science, Advertisement starts with the study of sound waves, how they travel, and how they have different frequencies. Students will learn how to create and manipulate sound waves using audio editing software, then produce radio advertisements about characters from The Odyssey. Award Winners

Covington High students Kathryn Pennington and Chandler Dejean were awarded the Masonic Grand Lodge Honesty and Integrity Award.

Electronic Field Trip

Covington High teacher Payton Monteleone and his Agriscience classes were featured on LPB’s live electronic field trip, Think Again: Restoring and Protecting the Gulf Coast. The students were given a brief history of the Gulf of Mexico and were shown many of the benefits that Louisiana reaps because of the coast. At the conclusion of the field trip, a discussion session was held about coastal erosion and silt build up from the Mississippi river and how that affects Louisiana.

Geaux Pink

Mrs. Leslie Landry, of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, recently attended the September Covington High School Key Club meeting. She was there to discuss what the center does and their “Geaux Pink” campaign, which CHS will be participating in with Key Club organizing. Outstanding Music Educator

Covington High School band director Lynn Bentivegna was named Louisiana's Outstanding Young Music Educator. She will accept the award in November at the Louisiana Music Educator Association.


Teacher of the Year

Covington High School is proud to have the 2011-2012 Region II Teacher of the Year on our staff! Richard "Vance" Lynch won the CHS Teacher of the Year award last spring, continued on to win the Parish Teacher of the Year, and finally the Region II Teacher of the Year award. He was presented with the award on July 22nd. In attendance was Principal Deborah McCollum with Mr. Lynch. Congratulations Mr. Vance Lynch!

NASA-Michoud Fellow

Covington High teacher Mr. John Thacker was selected as a 2011-2012 NASA Fellow. He attended a reception at Michoud with the four astronauts who flew the final space shuttle mission.

State FFA Parliamentarian

Covington High senior Bryan Haley was elected State FFA Parliamentarian
representing 10,000 state FFA members.

STEM Institute Fellow

Covington High teacher Dr. Pat Edmiston has been selected as a Siemens STEM Institute Fellow for 2011. Chosen from among 4,000 educators nationwide, she is among the 69 participants who attended the Institute in late July in Washington, D.C.

Key Club Fundraising Drive

Covington High School's Key Club recently held two fund raising drives at the Hwy 190 Winn Dixie in Covington. The funds raised will go to help the club defray the cost of the District and International Conventions as well as other service projects throughout the year. Engineering Camp

Students of the Month

Covington High School August’s Students of the Month are
Madeleine Boyd and Eric Kyathfield.

Madeleine has been an honor student her entire CHS career, earning the 3.5+ GPA award every semester while enrolled in honors, gifted and AP classes. As a member of National Honor Society and a Literary Rally participant in English for the past two years, Madeleine has shown her academic excellence. She also won the Outstanding Student Award last year for English III, Spanish IV and Biology II. Madeleine is active is service to CHS as well. She serves as the editor-in-chief of The Lion’s Roar, Foreign Language Club president, and Quiz Bowl Team captain. In addition, she has participated as a Big Lion Mentor, member of Key Club, and the emcee of the Mr. CHS competition. In the larger Covington community, Madeleine volunteers as a member of Christ Church Youth, Relay for Life Team Captain, and as CHS’s columnist for the Times-Picayune.

Eric has also excelled academically at CHS, maintaining a 4.1 GPA in CHS’s honors and AP advanced curriculum. He scored a 4 on the English AP exam, and a 2 on the American History AP exam. Eric’s involvement with CHS Naval Jr. ROTC has afforded him the opportunity for service and leadership. He serves as the group’s Executive Officer and is the captain of the Physical Training and Orienteering teams of CHS’s NJROTC. He is a graduate of both the Leadership Academy and basic Leadership Training. Eric is also a CHS athlete, swimming for the Lions this season. He was elected as the National Honor Society Vice-President for this school year as well. Eric maintains jobs at a local retailer and at his family’s campground.
