Cooling Off

l

Principal Susan Wolfe and Assistant Principal Melissa Eason  and several teachers had a cooling off on a recent “waterball”  experience. Classes from each grade level that collected the most “box tops” for the year had the great privilege of throwing water balls at their administrators.  But, the grownups got to throw back!  Everyone had a lot of fun and ended up wet. Over 40,000 water balls were collected which added up to over $4,000 for the school PTA.

Violin Concert

l

Kindergarten through third grade violin students from Covington Elementary and Lyon Elementary School recently had their end of the year concert at CES.  Students, along with their teacher Sarah DeWeese, performed for a very large audience of proud parents, grandparents and teachers.

Brady Award Winners

l

Brady Award Winners for the 2013-14 School Year are named at Covington Elementary School. Award Winners are Isabella Tarosova and Hollis Sanchez.  The other Brady Award nominees were Samantha West, Isaac Anderson, Caroline Feilding, Aiden Peltier, Austin Black, Emily Boudreaux, Matthew Brown, Hailey Williams, Parker Ryan, and Heather Dahlme.

 

 

Teachers for an Hour

l

Third grade students in Lauryn Faciane’s classroom were excited about being teachers for an hour.  They had an hour to work on letters sounds, number sentences,  
writing stories and  reading to the Kindergarteners from Sharon Wilcox’s class.  The third graders were surprised at how much the five year olds were capable of doing
and decided teaching was tough work!

Field Day

l

Covington Elementary School recently held its annual Field Day!  Boys and girls had a wonderful time running relay races, cross country, rescuing their teachers, tossing Frisbees, doing the spiderman crawl, and a host of other fun activities before the heavens opened up and the rains came down.  They ended the day with cool snacks.

Students Visit State Capital

l

Covington Elementary School third graders visited the Louisiana State Capital in Baton Rouge. During the visit, Representative John M. Schroder took time out of his very busy day to meet with the students and answer questions they had for him.  He provided the students with a special certificate, a state capital pin, and a tasty ice cream sandwich for dessert.

Mardi Gras Mambo

l

The “Fish” philosophy is alive and well at Covington Elementary School.  This month students participated in the Fishing Celebration, the Mardi Gras Mambo, if they had obtained 12 “Bait Bucks” during the month of February.  Bait bucks are given when faculty and staff members “catch” a student “fishing”. Students came into the gym, had king cake, discussed what the four components of fish philosophy are and then second lined to Mardi Gras music with umbrellas.

Love on a Leash

l

Five second grade students at Covington Elementary School are tutored twice a week by STAIR, start the adventure in reading, tutors. The tutors read with the students and work on skills that will help them be successful in the classroom.  Recently those students were treated to a visit by some very special four legged  guests.  Puppies that are involved in the Love on a Leash program came in to be read to by the students.
Love on a  Leash provides interactions with animals and students to promote reading.

Moms and Dads Lunch

l

Covington Elementary School was excited to welcome Moms and Dads for lunch last week.  They received their lunch and then were escorted to the gym which was all decorated in Mardi Gras colors purple, green and gold.   Jazz music played while parents and children had a chance to eat lunch and visit with each other.  After they finished their lunches, special keepsake photos were taken by Ms. Wolfe and Ms. Eason  to be given to the parents.  Over the two day period, there were over 400 parents that came to share this special time.

Mayoral Visit

l

Third graders from Covington Elementary recently took a walking field trip to visit Mayor Mike Cooper at City Hall.  The boys and girls got to ask questions about Mayor Cooper's responsibilities, why he wanted to be the mayor, and what his views were on many state and national issues. The third graders also visited the Trailhead where they watched a very interesting and informative video on Covington.

Literacy Night

Literacy Night at CES  was enjoyed by over 400 parents and students.   Adults and students alike came to the event all comfortable in their pajamas.  Everyone enjoyed the Starbooks Café, technology, gingerbread cookie glyphs, a visit by Santa, writing special letters, the book fair and lots of other special activities.  After completing at least three activities everyone was treated to dinner in the cafeteria served by teachers and administrators.

Special Homecoming

l

Samuel and Marybeth Garrick, students at Covington Elementary School, were surprised by the special homecoming of their dad, Jessie Garrick. Jessie has been deployed in Kuwait arrived at the BR airport at 11:30 am and headed straight for the school and his children.

Here’s our crossing guard, Alan Knight, as Santa and our head custodian, Paul Cutrer, as the elf, in their Christmas gear greeting the students for the last day before the Christmas break!  They LOVED it!!!!

 

CHS Lions Visit Covington Elementary

l

Covington High School "Big" lions visited the Little lions at Covington Elementary School.  The cheerleaders, football players, band members, and dance team welcomed students as they got off the buses and went to the playground.  When the bell rang the "Big" lions participated in the CES morning broadcast.  Many of the "Big" lions are former CES students.  They ended their visit with a cheer and singing the Covington High School fight song.

Fishing Celebration

l

We had our monthly PBS Fishing Celebration recently. Students had to earn at least 10 Bait Bucks and have excellent FISHIN’ Behavior to be able to attend.  The PBS celebration was an extra 20 minute recess and a freeze pop.  We had a GREAT time! Here are some pictures of the fun we all had!

Education Appreciation Doughnuts

l

Students and faculty were surprised with 8 dozen doughnuts from The American Legion Post 16, Mr. Muhammad Abdullah and his wife, Alaina Abdulla and their two children Alan and Aaliyah Abdullah.  The other two students are Sophia and Marissa and Sophia Reeves, behind them is Assistant Principal, Melissa Eason.  They were here for Education Appreciation.  It was a very nice treat that was greatly appreciated.

Veterans Day

l

Covington Elementary School third graders  had the great honor of performing as part of the Veterans Day Program at the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center in downtown Covington.  The students under the direction of Ms. Peggy Crain performed several songs for the Veterans and other guests in the morning.    Later in the day, the students performed patriotic songs, saluted the flags and Veterans of each of the different branches of the Armed Forces.  Students  explained what each of those branches serve, what Taps are, and how Veterans Day came about.

Red Ribbon Week

l

Covington Elementary School students lead the Just Say No Walk and Rally from CES to Pitcher Jr. High football stadium.  Other schools that participated were Lyon Elementary, Pine View Middle School, and William Pitcher Jr. High.  Law Enforcement agencies represented were the Louisiana State Troopers, St Tammany Sheriff's Office, and the Covington City Police.  The agencies brought drug dogs, all terrain vehicles and other tactile units that are used in the fight against drugs in St. Tammany Parish.  Speakers included Captain Jack West, Trooper Nick Manale, and Deputy Eddie Vauthier.  Mr. Brandon Clanton, former Principal at CES and now Supervisor for St. Tammany Parish Schools, was also present for the rally.  Students from each of the schools represented performed songs, cheers, and dance routines and then were able to visit with the officers after the rally.

Fuel Up and Play 60

l

Covington Elementary PE teacher Tina Neal and cafeteria manager, Carolyn Pierre, teamed up with teachers and students to Fuel Up and Play 60.  Students that fueled up with a good breakfast in cafeteria were given a "fuel up" sticker.  Then they went outside where Ms. Neal had a special activities for them.

Food Bank Collections

l

Covington Elementary  School students and faculty collected a truck full of food items for the Covington Food Bank. Pictured are second and third graders with  Ms. Laurie Caserta  as they prepare to deliver the food. Great Job!!

 

Breakfast Message

l

Breakfast does a body good at CES.  Kindergarten parents had fun sharing breakfast with their children.  It is the first day a school wide emphasis is being placed on  the importance of eating a good healthy breakfast to grow a strong healthy body and mind.

Grandparent Bingo

l

Grandparents and students at Covington Elementary School had a great time playing bingo and spending time together at their annual grandparents day bingo.

 

Read for the Record

l

Retired principals Bill Brady, below, and Martha Romo, above, visited Covington Elementary School to read to kindergarten and first grade students.  They read the book Otis by Loren Long as part of the "Read for the Record" activity sponsored by the Junior League.  All classes received a copy of the book.

 

 

Breast Cancer Awareness

Covington Elementary School faculty, staff and students raised money and awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness by paying $1 to wear pink.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Terrific Kids

CES Terrific Kids were honored at a special awards breakfast.  The Covington Kiwanis Club partners with Covington Elementary School to promote students that do their best in class and out in the community.  Students receive certificates, stickers, bumper stickers and biscuits and sausage to share with their families.

Superhero PTA

l

This was a nice treat from our SUPERHERO PTA here at Covington Elementary.
They left this in the lounge for every faculty and staff member!  We also pulled out
6 names during our morning broadcast, and they won a Campbell's Coffee Gift Certificate and one lucky teacher won an Ulta gift bag. We love and appreciate our PTA!

 

Multiplication Facts

l

Ms. Scobel's third graders are learning multiplication facts using the numberline.  Here students went outdoors to complete their problems with class buddies, using a multisensory approach. Pictured are Adriana Hernandez, La'nya Ladner, and Heather Dalme working hard to complete their problems.  After completion of the problems, the students have to be able to verbalize the process they used to find their answers.

Grants Awarded

a

Covington Elementary School teachers Sarah Thompson and Tina Neal each received $500 classroom grants from First Castle Federal Credit Union.  Ms. Thompson is a Transitional first grade teacher and will be using her grant to help support her
Learning stations in her classroom.  Ms. Neal is the PE teacher and is excited about purchasing equipment that will allow her to encourage students to be heart healthy.  The grant checks were presented by Ms. Ashley Lester.

 

First Day of School

Covington Elementary School Super Principal Susan Wolfe welcomes second graders Lacie Bourg, Malachhi Williams, and Caroline Willie on the first day of school.  The school theme for the year is "Knowledge is Power".  The CES second grade teachers Mary Secrist, Dianthe' Daviston, Lisa Myers, Cary Froeba, Claire Romage, and Rebekah Scherer are charged and ready to begin the new year.
