School Hosts Thanksgiving
Feast for Friends and Neighbors

Carolyn Park Middle School’s annual “Feast for Friends” brought together more than 600 people from neighborhoods around the Slidell school to enjoy dinner on November 25, a volunteer project of dozens of school workers and community helpers.

The seventh annual “Feast for Friends” event was the continuation of a Thanksgiving week tradition that has developed deep community connections. “This is one of the most special events during the School Year for the community,” said Superintendent W. L. “Trey” Folse, III. “And it is a perfect community connection, because it reaches the ones who need it the most.”

A dinner of turkey and dressing, ham, cranberry sauce, mashed sweet potatoes, string bean casserole, homemade buns, tea, and desserts were offered to the many visitors to the school cafeteria.

Principal Tony Esposito, who came up with the idea seven years ago, said it has become a popular event the neighbors look forward to all year. The idea came from his family's efforts to deliver holiday meals to shut-ins in the area. “We would pick up the meals and then go door to door, with my little girls delivering them to the people,” he explained. “When I came to this school, I thought it was something we could start doing here. During the holidays, we really need to reach out to those who don’t have what they need,” said Esposito.

Terry O'Malley, who coordinates the project for the school, said the effort of twenty plus school cafeteria workers, teachers, and others started on Saturday and continued all day Monday, preparing and cooking many of the menu items from scratch. “My wife and I have been doing this for seven years, and we look forward to it all year. Many of the helpers come from area Knights of Columbus councils.
