State Fitness Meet Winners

Two students from Abney Elementary and members of the St Tammany Parish Public School State Fitness Team recently participated and competed at the state fitness meet in Baton Rouge.  Both of the young students placed at the meet with Maya Calloway placing first in the Shuttle Run.  The St. Tammany Parish Public School Fitness Team was coach by Mr. Brian Donnelly, the physical education coach at Abney Elementary.

Salmen Students Vist Abney

On Thursday, April 16th Salmen High School students visited Mrs. Ricketts’ first grade class at Abney Elementary.  Mrs. Ricketts’ students were learning about various jobs so the Salmen students read the book “If I Ran the Zoo” by Dr. Seuss.  The first graders then created their own imaginative animal to take care of if they were the zookeeper.  Finally, they played a job matching game.

Top 40 Students in Mobi Max Program

Sandra Donnow Honored with Heart of the Program Award

Every year a St. Tammany School Board school food service technician is honored with the Heart of the Program Award for outstanding performance.  Cafeteria managers from each school nominates one technician from their schools and the central office selects one parish-wide winner.  This year’s winner is Sandra Donnow from Abney Elementary School.   Sandra joined the cafeteria staff in 2010 and has been a tremendous asset to the program. The school’s many visitors often comment on Sandra’s PBS with students.  Sandra’s can-do attitude is appreciated by her co-workers.

Students Participate in Young Authors Contest

Abney Elementary School recently participated in the Northshore Reading Councils’ “Young Authors” Writing Contest.  Pictured below are the school level winners for 1st through 3rd grade.  These students will have their writing submitted for the school district competition.

Santa Serves Lunch!

Annual Holiday Program

Abney Elementary recently held their annual Holiday Program.  Pictured are several of the groups along with pictures of the many guests who attended.

Pictured are various groups of students from Abney Elementary pictured with Chief Randy Smith and some of his officers and staff at the Slidell Police Headquarters.  The students, which included members of the school's dance team, chorus, honor band and jump rope team, presented a holiday program to the Slidell Police Department.

Gold Fish Club Visits Pre-K Students

Pictured are The Abney Elementary Gold Fish Club visiting Abney Elementary Early Childhood Pre-K students to read, and distribute books to the Spartan Sprouts.

 

Love of Leash Visits Animal Lovers' Club

Love of Leash recently visited the monthly Abney Elementary Animal Lovers' Club meeting.  Love on the Leash brought 7 dogs to the event and all the club members thoroughly enjoyed petting and interacting with the dogs.

Annual Food Drive

Abney Elementary and Abney Early Childhood recently held the annual food Drive.  This year the goal was 2,000 non- perishable items. The school collected over 2,400 items.  This was well over one ton of food for the needed families of Slidell.  The drive was co-sponsored by the Gold Fish Club and the Scout Pack 42. Pictured are students and staff from both clubs loaded the food in the food bank truck.

Slidell Memorial Donates School Supplies

Slidell Memorial Hospital recently held a school supply drive with it employees.  Shown in the picture is Mr. Mike Alford, Principal of the Abney Elementary Learning Community receiving a portion of the donated school supplies from Mrs. Christi Chagnard, Unit Assistant at Slidell Memorial Hospital.”

Scouts Act as Greeters at Patriot Day Event

The Abney Elementary scouts were greeters and ushers at the City of Slidell's Patriot Day Ceremony at the Slidell Auditorium. The boys handed out programs for the ceremony and greeted the first responders and their guests as they arrived. The boys got to meet lots of first responders, including the Fire Chief and the Chief of Police

Abney & Community Leaders Complete Ice Bucket Challenge

Abney elementary recently completed the ALS Bucket Challenge with several local community leaders participating. In the first photo below is Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge at Abney Elementary School.  Chief Smith along with other community leaders helped the school raise over $1,000 for the ALS foundation.

An Original Abney Elementary Teacher Visits

2014 marks Abney Elementary' s 50th of educating the students of south Slidell. 
Pictured with Mr. Mike Alford, current principal of Abney Elementary, is Ms. Jo Ann Gomez. 
Ms. Gomez was one of the original teachers at Abney who started the first day the
school opened in September of 1964.

Family Fun Night

Abney Family Fun Night was held recently at Abney Elementary School.  Several hundred
families attended this event and were treat to all types of fun activities,  The school also showcased several of its clubs and organizations.  Both the school's PTA and Scout Troop sponsored the event.

Logo Made of Mardi Gras Beads
Presented to School Board

l

Students at Abney Elementary created a St. Tammany Parish Public School System Logo out of Mardi Gras beads the last two weeks of school, and Superintendent W. L. "Trey" Folse, III unveiled it to the School Board at the group's June 12 meeting in Covington. Principal Mike Alford explained how his art teacher Irit Sirkes and students created the artwork after Superintendent Folse had admired one of their Mardi Gras bead pieces of art during a visit to the school in May.
