Teaching Garden Planted

Students at Abney Elementary School are learning all about homegrown vegetables this semester, as they plant and nurture several raised beds in the green spaces between classroom wings. Parents helped put together the planting beds last Saturday, and classes helped and had fun activities during the planting of the beds on Wednesday afternoon.

On hand for the presentation of a Gold Shovel Plaque naming Abney Elementary as a “Teaching Garden School,” were, from left to right, teachers Geremy Jackson and Christine Landry, Assistant Principal Kelley Smith, Principal Mike Alford and teacher Suzanne Cole. Jessica Gremillion, vice president of the local American Heart Association, and Brittany Gay, a coordinator with the Association.

It is the first teaching garden planted in the area, and it not only teaches students how to plant and care for vegetables, it also comes with a curriculum with lessons on the importance of eating healthy, recycling, and the use of math in keeping track of garden growth. “It’s really just keeping nutrition and physical activity in the front of their minds,” said Ms. Gremillion. “We are trying to get the children to embrace eating healthier while having fun with the garden.”

The parents built the raised beds from materials delivered to the school by the American Heart Association. The project was funded by LLOG Exploration, she said.

Patriot's Day Observed

Fifth grade students from Abney Elementary commemorate Patriot's Day by a special presentation honoring the victims of September 11. They presented their program via live broadcast to the whole school during morning meeting.

Teaching Garden

A new program for fourth and fifth grade students will be launched this year called “The Teaching Garden.” The program is designed to improve student learning through hands-on, real world lessons and improve their nutrition intelligence.

The first phase of the Teaching Garden involves classes planting herbs and vegetables to grow seedlings to plant in the raised beds. The second phase will be the building of the ten raised beds and filling them with soil. This will take place on Saturday, September 22, with assistance of adult volunteers. The raised bed gardens will be located adjacent to the fifth grade hall next to the old kindergarten wing, between Bldg. 2 and 1-C. On Wednesday, September 26, we will have the school planting day.

Beginning the first Monday in October, (October 1st) we will have our Garden Club meetings. The fourth graders will meet on the first Monday of each month, with the fifth graders meeting the 3rd Monday (October 15). The meetings will last from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will include instructional time and activity time.

Abney's Teaching Garden is a hands-on learning laboratory where 4th and 5th grade students learn how to plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest and use the produce to create part of a meal. "We are very excited about this project as it will promote understanding of the value of healthy eating. Additionally, it will reinforce responsibility, leadership and team building. Educationally, students will learn environmental awareness, life science, use problem-solving skills and math skills," said Mrs. Landry and Mrs. Cole, the "Garden Champions" who are implementing the new program.

A binder full of ideas for tying in garden lessons to each teacher's regular curriculum has been placed in the teacher’s workroom.

The American Heart Association is sponsoring the project by providing some basic supplies and equipment to establish and maintain the Teaching Garden, and technical support to help establish and maintain the garden.
