Lancaster Elementary fifth grader Zoë Dieringer has been selected as a finalist in the state’s 2018 Students of the Year competition.
“We are extremely proud of Zoë, and we are excited to have her represent St. Tammany as a finalist in the state competition,” said Superintendent Trey Folse. “She is a smart, talented and well-rounded student who has many accomplishments both at school and in the community.”
Zoë is one of seven fifth grade students selected as finalists in the competition coordinated by the Louisiana Department of Education.
The Lancaster Elementary fifth grader is the quintessential example of a well-rounded student. Zoë was recognized for her LEAP test results by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) in 2017. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA in her first six quarters at Lancaster Elementary while receiving Academic Achievement honors in reading, science, and social studies. She was a Student Council Representative, volunteers in the library, serves as a tutor for other students, is a member of the Nutritional Advisory Club, and plays flute in the school band.
Not only is Zoë strong academically, she is also an accomplished ballet dancer. She is a member of the Hammond Ballet Youth Ensemble and she accepted an invitation to attend the American Ballet Theatre Youth Dancer Summer Workshop in New York City. She has been invited to compete at the Youth America Grand Prix and the American Dance and International Ballet Competitions. Zoë is a member of the A Touch of Class competition dance team and has won numerous overall awards for solo and group dances. Zoë hopes to become a professional dancer and later become an astrophysicist and an author.
Zoë advanced to the regional competition after being named district elementary school student of the year earlier this year.
One 5th, 8th, and 12th grader are selected from each of the state's seven regions to move on to compete in the state level competition.
The finalists will convene April 11th at the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge for an awards ceremony and the announcement of the state Students of the Year.
