De'Jeune' Vu

For the second straight year, Covington High's De'Jeune' Richardson placed first at the Louisiana State Poetry Out Loud competition in Baton Rouge.

Richardson was one of three Covington High students competing at the state competition, joining classmates Grace McCullar and Justin Basse. Justin placed second at the state competition.

A year ago, Richardson finished in the top eight at the 2017 National Poetry Out Loud Championship. She will again represent Louisiana in Washington, D.C., at the 2018 National Finals held April 23-25 at the Lisner Auditorium at The George Washington University. The semifinals and finals will be webcast live on

She is the only two-time state winner from St. Tammany Parish. She remains only the second STPPS student win the state competition (Maria Hefte, CHS, 2010).

Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 schools in every state, Washington, DC, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
