A 50-Year Surprise (02-26-2018)
When Superintendent Trey Folse walked into Salmen High's faculty meeting with a bouquet of flowers, Sylvia Brown had a feeling something was different about this meeting.
On Wednesday, Feb. 21, Superintendent Folse surprised Salmen High special education teacher Sylvia Brown to recognize her for her 50 years of dedication to the St. Tammany Parish Public School System. Superintendent Folse presented Brown with flowers and a 50-year pin in front of her co-workers who gave her a standing ovation.
Brown, a native of Folsom, has spent her entire teaching career in STPPS. She began as a Special Education teacher at St. Tammany High School (now St. Tammany Junior High) in Slidell before moving to Salmen High School, where she has been ever since. In fact, Brown was a member of the first faculty when Salmen High opened in 1969.
In addition to her special education career, she has also taught physical education, coached track and basketball, and also served as an IEP Coordinator and guidance counselor.
