Parents Meeting Focuses on Safe Teen Driving

The second annual Parents’ Focus on Safe Teen Driving was held October 14, the day before the parishwide Teens Focus on Safe Driving. Parents and teens from across the parish saw a variety of exhibits, met with law enforcement officers, and heard a panel discussion that dealt with issues such as insurance coverage, court procedures on traffic tickets, distractions while driving, and other topics that challenge teens on the road. From left are Louisiana State Trooper Louis Calato, School Board Member Michael Dirmann, Major Tim Lentz of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, Panel Emcee Margaret Sharpe, LSU Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine Dr. Todd Thoma , Stacey Mequet of the Youth Service Bureau, and Captain Kevin O’Neil of the Slidell Police Department. They all agreed that text messaging was becoming one of the greatest distractions to safe driving for young people. Dr. Thomas gave a presentation on the types of injuries sustained during automobile crashes and told how seat belts and air bags can greatly reduce traffic deaths. The event was sponsored by the St. Tammany Parish Public School System and took place in the Pelican Park Castine Center near Mandeville.
