Unit Description

The unit focuses on reading and responding to science fiction and modern fantasy set in the past, the present, and the distant future. The characteristics of fantasy and science fiction are defined and described. Also, a study of story elements is included. Students are given the opportunity to respond in both written and oral forms. As the fantasy and science fiction genre is rich in visualization, students will create various art projects (paintings, collages, mobiles). Skills and concepts addressed throughout the unit include foreshadowing and flashback, setting and mood, irony, characterization, conflict, and point of view, cause and effect, and inferential comprehension.   Persuasion in advertising and media is also explored.  Students view, analyze, and create their own persuasive products.

Essential Questions

·         Why are there societies? How is living in a society an advantage to me? Disadvantage?

·         Why do cultures regulate the behavior of individuals? How does society regulate behavior of individuals? How does balancing the need of society versus the need of individuals create dilemmas?

·         How can I influence the policies of my society? Why should I be concerned about members of my community?

·         How can I respect the values of my community when my needs are in conflict?
