Unit Description

This unit will develop enduring understandings related to character, bravery, and humanity. Students will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction stories and an historical fiction novel related to World War II.  Students will use class discussions and comprehension strategies including:  identifying the characteristics of realistic and historical fiction, character, setting, and plot development, summarizing and paraphrasing, identifying cause and effect, and making predictions.  Vocabulary will be developed through the use of the dictionary, context clues, and analogies.  Writing instruction will focus on the writing process, expository writing, research, and journaling.

 

Enduring Understandings

·       Character is revealed during difficult times, as well as good times.

·       Being brave is being able to do something you fear even though you are afraid.

·       Man’s inhumanity to man helps bring people and countries together or divide them.

·       Man has a responsibility to protect and preserve the world around him.

Essential Questions

·         When might you ever have to rescue another person? An animal? When would it be a difficult choice to make?

·         What is your definition of “bravery”?

·         When is helping others worth risking your own personal safety?

·         Why does one person treat another person or an animal badly?

·         Why is it important to tell stories of man’s humanity? inhumanity?
