Unit 3: Our American Heritage

Unit Description

In this unit, students will read and research inventive and adventurous Americans, both fictional and real, famous and not famous.  Learning about diverse people who contributed to the growth and development of our country will give students a greater appreciation of our nation and its history.  The unit will focus on historical fiction and nonfiction.  Students will focus on summarizing and paraphrasing, main idea and supporting details, classifying and categorizing, and study strategies.  Writing instruction will focus on poetry, research, and essays.   Students will prepare and deliver research papers and edit and revise their work using the Writing Process.  Vocabulary instruction will focus on developed word lists.

·         Why it important to learn about historical figures from diverse cultures?

·         How would our society be different if we were all the same?
