Unit Description Students
read about characters that grow and change along with their environment. In recognizing that change is natural,

growth. This unit focus is on reading,
realistic fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction texts. The writing focus will be on poetry,
persuasive writing, and informational text.
Text structures are examined for organization and sequence, literary
devices, descriptive details, author’s style and purpose, and elements of
nonfiction. Study strategies will be
addressed and students will learn to pose questions of informational text in
order to accurately list a chain of events and understand main ideas and
details. Reading strategies will
include; questioning to increase comprehension, differentiation of fact and
opinion, oral reading fluency, evaluation of informational sources, use of transition
words to understand sequence of events, comparing and contrasting to
determine likenesses and differences, researching a variety of resources that
includes electronic sources, and using story information and life experiences
to draw conclusions. Vocabulary
