Unit Description

This unit focuses on reading and writing folktales. Purposes for reading is to entertain, make connections, and understand world cultures. Reading strategies will include; questioning to increase comprehension, oral reading fluency, use of literary devices (figurative language), plot development, character, identifying protagonist and antagonist, using mental imagery to describe setting, sequencing events, and summarizing and paraphrasing. Writing will focus on: using literary devices, awesome adjectives, amazing adverbs, and vivid verbs to create mental images, audience awareness, sequence events, and utilizing the writing process to compose a folktale or fable. Vocabulary instruction will focus on developing target vocabulary through decoding and context clues. Spelling will emphasize suffixes, possessives, compounds and plurals.
