Unit Description Students
will discover the benefits of embracing their own unique ideas, interests,
and abilities. They will read about characters that have become
self-empowered to make a difference in their worlds by creatively tackling
challenges. Students will realize that many different people in many
different situations can demonstrate true courage. This unit focus is on
reading and writing fictional and non-fictional texts. Reading strategies
will include guided reading, modeled reading, think/pair/share, questioning
to increase comprehension, and the use of narrative elements to analyze a
story. Written compositions will include the personal narrative, friendly
letter, and guided expository. Students will learn the dynamics of group work
and implement the writing process utilizing the LEAP writer's checklist.
Vocabulary instruction will focus on context clues, using references such as
a dictionary, thesaurus, and appropriate online references. |
