Unit Description

This unit will focus on critical thinking skills as students identify cause and effect relationships, continue to make and confirm predications, compare and contrast story elements and distinguish fact from opinion in fictional text. Students will also read non-fiction text and explore the organization of non-fiction text. Reading strategies will include questioning to increase comprehension, skimming and scanning.  Writing instruction will focus on writing to inform and writing a friendly letter.  Students will edit and revise their work. Vocabulary instruction will focus on developing word lists, concept maps, and dictionary skills. Spelling and phonics instruction will focus on consonant and vowel blends and digraphs, and high frequency words writers use.

·         Life lessons are sometimes communicated through story-telling.

·         Why are stories passed down?

·         Why is the same kind of story often found in different countries?

·         How is my life like some of these stories?
