Schools and Curriculum ::..
The School System consists of 54 schools. In addition to the core curriculum, St. Tammany public schools offer a variety of electives, enrichment and extracurricular activities. School personnel at all schools have the latitude to add or design particular programs and activities to serve the specific needs of their students.
Making education relevant for all students is a primary aim of the System. The locally developed curriculum is based on State-mandated standards and benchmarks for learning for every grade level and subject area. These standards and benchmarks were developed with input from educators, parents, and business/civic leaders across the state to identify the knowledge students are expected to learn and be able to apply.
Graduates are being prepared to continue their education or to enter the workforce immediately. Numerous alternative programs, as well as other innovative programs for the arts, gifted, talented, honors, advanced placement, R. O. T. C., study/internship and vocational studies, are offered.
Elementary education focuses strong attention on learning the foundation skills of reading, writing and mathematics. Early childhood programs for four-year-olds are provided at some schools.
Special education programs, including gifted and talented, are offered based on assessments of student needs. Exceptional children and young people of ages 3 through 21 are served according to federal, state and local requirements.
